Description

Abridged edition, read by Richard E Grant (Withnail and I, Persuasion)

The historical saga that has enthralled millions of fans, Ken Follett's Kingsbridge series continues with World Without End.

On the day after Halloween, in the year 1327, four children slip away from the cathedral city of Kingsbridge. They are a thief, a bully, a boy genius and a girl who wants to be a doctor. In the forest they see two men killed.

As adults, their lives will be braided together by ambition, love, greed and revenge. They will see prosperity and famine, plague and war. One boy will travel the world but come home in the end; the other will be a powerful, corrupt nobleman. One girl will defy the might of the medieval church; the other will pursue an impossible love. And always they will live under the long shadow of the unexplained killing they witnessed on that fateful childhood day.

Ken Follett’s masterful epic The Pillars of the Earth enchanted millions of readers with its compelling drama of war, passion and family conflict set around the building of a cathedral. World Without End takes readers to medieval Kingsbridge two centuries later, as the men, women and children of the city once again grapple with the devastating sweep of historical change.

World Without End is followed by the third of Ken Follett's Kingsbridge novels, A Column of Fire.

Accompanied by a hard copy(spoiler warning)

I received a paperback copy of World Without End as a gift for my birthday. At over 1000 pages it is longer than my preferred book size at 300-500 pages. So I decided I would listen to the audio book along with reading the physical copy so I could finish it. I would sometimes re-listen to sections I had read in the book rather than trying to find my exact place. In doing so I noticed that there were things left out of the audio book. I only noticed this towards the end of the book so I'm not sure how prevalent it was throught. But starting when Caris breaks up a fight of boys the audio book leaves out that she was struck with a shovel in the head, how Gwenda finds out Sam has ran away to othenby, how Caris finds out about phillipa and Merthin when confronted by phillipa, details of phillipa tricking Ralph into sleeping with her. These are just the few instances I can remember after finishing the book and I only made a mental note of them so perhaps my memory fails me. I just found it very odd that they were missing; the details may not have been important to the overall story. It was really only a few sentences. But now I wonder if all the audio books I've listened to but never read are missing sentences. Overall was very well read and I enjoyed it very much other than the missing bits.
