À propos de cet audio

How can parents really help their children succeed at school — without relying on fads or conflicting advice?

I’m Chris Battle, a teacher, tutor, and director of a tutoring centre in Bedford, UK. For over twenty years, I’ve worked with children and families to understand what truly drives progress in learning. My approach combines classroom experience with research in psychology, behavioural genetics, and cognitive science, giving parents practical, evidence-based insights they can use at home.

In Nudge Your Child Ahead, I share short, focused episodes that explain what works — and why — across reading, maths, motivation, confidence, and exam preparation. Each episode translates the latest educational and psychological research into clear, actionable advice grounded in real tutoring experience.

If you want to understand how children learn — and how you can support that learning more effectively — this podcast will help you do exactly that.

Listen on your commute, the school run, or over coffee: five to eight minutes a day to help you truly nudge your child ahead.

  • Ep 4: “My Year 2 Child Still Can’t Read — and Everyone Else Seems Ahead”
    Oct 15 2025
If your Year 2 child still can’t read — or struggles even to sound out simple words — you’re not alone. Many parents feel anxious, frustrated, and unsure how to help when reading just doesn’t “click.” In this episode, Chris Battle explains why that happens, what phonics really does inside a child’s brain, and how anxiety and frustration at home can make things even harder. Drawing on The Reading Framework and over twenty years’ experience helping children learn to read, Chris shares practical strategies, real success stories, and the reassuring truth that every child can learn — once reading feels calm, consistent, and safe again.

  • BGM_Ep 3: My Child Isn’t Doing Well in GCSE Maths — and I’m Worried They Won’t Pass
    Oct 12 2025
My Child Isn’t Doing Well in GCSE Maths — and I’m Worried They Won’t Pass. They Say They’ve Revised by Watching YouTube Videos — But How Can You Learn Maths from a Video? Many teenagers insist they’ve “revised” by watching YouTube tutorials, but GCSE Maths isn’t a spectator sport. It’s procedural — like learning to drive — and real understanding only comes from doing the steps yourself. In this episode, Chris Battle explains why confidence in maths is so easily lost, how small gaps quickly grow into big barriers, and why in-person teaching often rebuilds belief faster than screens ever can. You’ll learn the psychology behind maths anxiety, how to structure effective practice, and practical ways parents can help their child turn passive revision into active progress. Because maths success isn’t about talent or luck — it’s about process, consistency, and the right kind of guidance.

  • Ep 2: Why Your Child Refuses Homework — and What to Do About It
    Oct 12 2025
When your once-eager child suddenly digs in their heels over homework, it can feel personal — but it isn’t. In this episode, teacher and tutor Chris Battle explores why homework resistance is so common around Year 4–5 and what parents can do to turn conflict into calm, productive routine. Drawing on insights from behavioural science and two decades of tutoring experience, Chris explains why small wins, choice, and positive reinforcement work better than confrontation — and how parents can build discipline without stress.
