Viktor E. Frankl was a medical doctor at a psychiatric hospital in 1942 when he became a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps in World War II. In 1946, he published this book about his camp experiences and a method of psychotherapy he developed. Forty-five years later, it was still named one of the most influential books in the United States. Part One describes his three years in four Nazi concentration camps, which took the lives of his wife, father, mother, and brother. He closely observed inmates’ reactions to their situation, as well as how survivors came to terms with their liberation.

Holocaust survivor Viktor E. Frankl is known as the founder of logotherapy, a mode of psychotherapy based on human's motivation to search for meaning in his life. Born in 1905 in the center of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian Empire, Viktor Frankl was a witness to the great political, philosophical, and scientific upheavals of the 20th century. In these stirring recollections, Frankl describes how as a young doctor of neurology in prewar Vienna, his disagreements with Freud and Adler led to the development of "the third Viennese School of Psychotherapy", known as logotherapy; recounts his harrowing trials in four concentration camps during the War; and reflects on the celebrity brought by Man's Search for Meaning in 1945.

Elf Monate nach seiner Befreiung aus dem Konzentrationslager hielt Viktor E. Frankl im März 1946 eine Reihe von Vorträgen an der Volkshochschule des Wiener Arbeiterbezirks Ottakring. Der Psychologe, der später weltberühmt werden sollte, erklärte seine zentralen Gedanken zu Lebenssinn und Resilienz. Ausgehend von seiner eigenen Maxime "Lebe so, als ob du zum zweiten Male lebtest", entfaltet Frankl seine Grundüberzeugung, dass Menschsein in jeder Lebenslage Auch-anders-Können bedeutet.

"Til syvende og sist burde vi mennesker ikke spørre hva meningen med livet er, men heller innse at det er oss selv som blir spurt." Dette er én av konklusjonene som Viktor E. Frankl trekker i logoterapien, som han utviklet på bakgrunn av sine tre år som konsentrasjonsleirfange. Ønsket om å få teoriene sine utbredt gav ham meningen med livet, og gjorde ifølge ham selv at han overlevde de umenneskelige vilkårene. I logoterapien blir viljen til mening framhevet som menneskets viktigste drivkraft, i motsetning til Freuds viljen til lyst og Adlers viljen til makt.

"Im Gegensatz zum Tier sagen dem Menschen keine Triebe, was er tun muss. Im Gegensatz zu früher sagen ihm auch keine Traditionen mehr, was er tun soll. Und oft weiß er nicht mehr, was er eigentlich will." So diagnostiziert Viktor Emil Frankl, Professor für Psychiatrie und Neurologie, das Befinden des heutigen Menschen.

In fünf Vorträgen und ausführlichen Gesprächen begründet Viktor E. Frankl seinen wissenschaftlich-therapeutischen Ansatz. Wir leiden vielfach an einem existenziellen Vakuum, das die innere Leere und Sinnlosigkeit massiv werden lässt. Dafür sind zwei Gründe maßgeblich: der Instinkt- und der Traditionsverlust. Frankl drar i logoterapin, den analysform som han ut-vecklade utifrån tre års erfarenhet som fånge i koncentrationsläger.
