La storia si svolge intorno ad una famiglia con tre bambini, che viene costretta, a causa di problemi economici, a trasferirsi in campagna, accanto ad una ferrovia. Intorno alla ferrovia si snodano gli avvenimenti comuni e non dei tre ragazzini. La storia racconta di come Heidi, una bambina di cinque anni, orfana e priva di qualsiasi istruzione, venga allevata sulle montagne svizzere, e sia poi costretta a confrontarsi con una realtà cittadina, che, pur nella sofferenza, le darà il dono di apprendere la lettura e di credere in Dio.
