Im Übergang zwischen den weithin unsystematischen Entdeckungsreisen des 15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts und der gegenwärtigen Gruppenforschung steht die über einhundert Jahre andauernde Phase der vor allem von herausragenden Einzelforschern getragenen Entdeckung der Erdoberfläche und ihrer Phänomene. In mehrfacher Hinsicht können Alexander von Humboldts Amerikareise (1799-1804) und Sven Hedins vierte Hochasien-Expedition (1927-1935) als Antipoden dieser Etappe der Erderforschung betrachtet werden.

It is the most fabled and storied journey in American history. From 1804-1806, the first expedition across the North American continent was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who had recently bought a vast swath of territory from France. Though he knew he had bought a huge amount of land, Jefferson wasn't entirely sure of what he had bought, so he asked a team, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, to traverse the continent until they reached the Pacific, studying everything from ecology to geography along the way.

The remainder of the passengers and crew of this ill-fated ship were most inhumanly murdered by the savages soon after they landed from the wreck.

These Chronicles could have been authored by Thomas Jefferson had he been so inclined to do so. He and Captain Meriwether Lewis spent long nights tracing its daily record of "Courses and Distances" onto brown paper on the floor of the East Wing of the White House. After Lewis's untimely death, Jefferson instead relegated the job to Captain William Clark. As a result, the narrative of the expedition has, until now, never been told as Captain Meriwether Lewis intended it to be.
