Here’s an example of how the word on the page coupled with a talented voice can make the story whole. I can’t imagine reading this and enjoying it so much! It’s insane fun where the mundane details of work and a corporation are sent up in the most refreshing way that’s to the author’s insight. Add the narrator’s comic timing, voice work and obvious enthusiasm and the whole thing flies along irresistibly at a breakneck pace! I’m getting the next one!

So good!

It’s like having 22 hours with someone you want to know. Takes courage to reveal all that she did. She gives us her own history, insight into her relationship with her husband and daughters and behind the scenes at the Whitehouse. And in doing so, she will make us all stronger. I think that’s her plan—especially to those of us who have ever felt marginalized or oppressed. You will feel good at the end of your time with Michelle Obama and who doesn’t need that?

I know this is a celebrated book and I wanted to love it. The adventures of a slave from boy to man is appealing. I will say I found the plot meandering and I didn’t understood the ending and I feel that there was a whole lot of cobbling bits together for it to make sense. Worst of all the accents of the performer are poorly done—the Scottish accent being virtually unrecognizable and at such a critical moment in the story! I wish audiobook producers would hire better directors. The performers and the listeners would benefit.

The narrator ‘s lush voice gives a lot of texture to a marvellous “stepping in to one’s light” story that has the interwoven plots of interspecies power struggles and questions about the veracity of history. Lush voice for a lush story. Unfortunately, the narrator chooses to highlight each character with an accent that is readily identifiable from today’s planet. I’m not sure why or how all these people would come to have these particular accents. There’s no rationale for it in the book. She’s very good at it but it becomes downright annoying and distracting. Better direction needed.

Some books aren’t meant to be audiobooks. The audio format brings to light the repetition of examples used by the author as well as clunky repetitive phrasing. Also, please Narrators, learn your pronunciations. Buddha is easier on the ears than Boooda. This Narrator’s Voice was so calming and the material repetitive and dry so I confess I used it to help me fall asleep.

Just read this one.

Riveting story that was made less so by unnecessarily slow halting narration. At many points the narrator sounded like a seven year old reading the words on the page for the first time. It was like only four words could be spoken before she paused. Not sure if this was a stylistic choice but it was annoying and detracted from my enjoyment of the overall experience. The story is superb however and so I persevered. Just read this one.

While I’m certain there’s valuable content here, it’s very dense. The narrator goes far too quickly in an impassioned tone. I’m not sure how he can go so quickly. The effect is sound and fury signifying nothing.

Takes a bit to get going but the last few chapters are worth the wait. I had to listen!
