Pay close attention, the author is somewhat subtle with the way the two back and forward stories are related. You'll notice key events to characters are consistent with each other in both stories. There is some great commentary about the relationship we feel with wild cat, and how it compares to the cats feelings, and a neanderthal's feelings. The thing I enjoyed the least were the parts in the present, partly because story-telling relies so much now on the "strong female lead" trope that it became like feedback in a speaker (overpowering what was otherwise a pleasant story). There were some really well done sexual tones throughout the book, but not erotic. Capturing this tone was essential since the book draws on topics in biology within which reproduction is a significant focus. Another negative is the book spends a lot of time building up the nature of motherhood across different groups (in the biological species sense)then in the end celebrates a crumby message (in my opinion).

So nice to listen to a classic from more than 20 years ago already. Voices and narration meets or exceeds expectations.

Listen, relax, and approach with soft objectivism: The art of not forgoing your views, but not holding them out as a shield to the discussion at hand.

You'll notice most reviews which are 3 stars or lower are from people that wish they could have argued a point they disagreed with. I do not believe any point to be hollow, or narrow. The author's tone leaves the ultimate conclusion up to you. This book changed my life in 2016 and this is my 3rd go around with it.
