Baffling and beloved, with the capacity to go from joy to frustration in seconds, young children are some of the most misunderstood people on the planet. Parents and caregivers struggle with these little ones, who are known for their extreme behaviour, from tantrums, resistance, and aggression to separation anxiety, bedtime protests, and not listening. The key to understanding youngsters lies in realizing that their challenging behaviour is not personal, nor is it a disorder or deficit.

This is the missing information that most of us parents wish we had but struggle to discover. This book gets to the heart of how our children can feel happy and secure and attached to us.
I wish I had been sent home from the hospital with this after my daughter was born.

The biggest takeaway is that we can Repair our relationships with our children and help them heal and move forward. We can encourage their growth and heal ourselves by learning with them.

I was about a third of the way through the book, and I thought it was superficial and insubstantial. But I decided to keep going because I had committed to reading it (and I wanted to mark it off as ‘Read’ on Good reads towards my 2019 book goal lol).
I got to the third story and that is where the book shifted for me. Mel Robbins (whom I had never heard of before this book), called a participant on their lies and really pulled the truth out of this woman. She saw what was really there and told it like she saw it. It was fairly simplistic in execution, but Mel showed her knowledge and understanding in her explanations later on. She just doesn’t say it in $5 words like a psychologist would.
I identified parts of myself, good and bad, in every story, and it will help me grow.
I am truly grateful I didn’t return the book.

On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.
