This was my least favourite in the series because the story line felt a little weak and I was less invested in the characters this time, it felt like a watered down version of what the other books in the series are to me. It almost seemed like there were too many characters so we scratched the surface of many but didn’t learn enough about each to get pulled into the story. I adore Joy Ellis and while it was not my favourite, it was still enjoyable.

One of my faves from the author

Really enjoyed this one! While it wasn’t a total departure from Patterson’s other works or style, the military legal angle and character insights that brought race and gender identities into play seemed really fresh from his other work. The story also has some unexpected twists as it unfolds.

I liked that this had a female main character for a change in the series, but I agree with other reviewers that it should have been performed by a woman - it would have greatly improved the experience. It would have been tricky to introduce a female voice though because Mary Catherine has always been played by a male.

I have and have enjoyed many of Joy Ellis’ novels, but this one fell short for me. The story line wasn’t engaging and it jumped around too much for my tastes. The narrator was ok, I think it was more the book itself that didn’t do it for me. But perhaps it just didn’t translate well into an audiobook format.

An easy and upbeat listen with powerful self-reflective lessons hidden inside this simple, almost child-like tale.

I can’t believe this filled a book

I admit to only reading 25% through before returning. The concept is ok - work 10x harder to produce better results, reiterated 1000 different ways. I agree with another review that the author is energized and passionate. Also agree with another review that the narration is abrasive and didn’t inspire me. Self help books and tough love are my jam, yet I couldn’t dig into this one.

Recommend to readers who enjoy crime stories with a strong female lead. The performance was good, but her child’s voice made me grit my teeth. This was not a page turner for me but I had to finish it. It left me unsatisfied but I like the main character and believe the next books in the series will be better.

I’d recommend this book to listeners who enjoy suspense/psychological thrillers. It was addictive and I finished it in two days, I was completely immersed and couldn’t stop. You are completely in Mike’s mind, without his voice being overly descriptive or contemplative. It’s a story you’ll be thinking of long after completing. The narrator’s voice was heavenly. I’ll be looking for other works from both narrator and the author.

The narrator and content were dry and hard to listen to. A ton of information not organized fluidly. It felt like I was in a university history class with a monotone professor. Depends what you’re into - I’m currently consuming books for entertainment and/or personal growth, not to gain knowledge of facts, dates, historic players, and quotes. Unfortunately this was a return.
