Story
In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit". Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success.

This was a tough read to start it felt very academic with lots if stats. It took grit to continue (pun intended) eventually I pushed passed the desire to quit and found the rest if the book insightful and eye opening. This would be another book that should be included in the first time parents bundle!

Story
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins - aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

2 stories in one. The Galvin Family story was saddening but fascinating at the same time. Questions raised through out around potential causes of the disease, the age old argument of nature vrs nurture. How each of the 14 family members were affected even though only 6 were officially diagnosed.
The story of schizophrenia throughout the 1900's, the various treatment regimes that changed as new research and technology became available and the very sad fact that despite continued work in this field there is still no definitive answer on what causes it or how best to treat it.
The two intertwined stories made this an exceptional read that had me hooked fro. the start!

The principles are simple. It was a little deep and dry and the narrator also felt dry but I feel that added to the overall tone of the book. The content and ideas are easy to understand and make a lot of sense. If only it was as easy to put it all into play.

pleasantly surprised
Reviewed: 2020-01-12
I usually revolt against motivating, change your life self help books because the authors never seem to live in the real world. However this one resonated with me as Rachel does appear somewhat "normal". Alrhough she still very much squawks the same message if how you and you alone are responsible for your happiness and lifestyle, she does demonstrate how its possible to make small but significant changes even when you feel like you already give everything you've got to your life and those around you.
