It is great to be able to read positive Christian novels that can show how meeting with Jesus and developing a relationship with Him is possible amid difficult circumstances. The narrator's deep voice is soothing even though the action can be difficult at times. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Story
A tour-de-force debut novel about a Two-Spirit Indigiqueer young man and proud NDN glitter princess who must reckon with his past when he returns home to his reserve. “You're gonna need a rock and a whole lotta medicine” is a mantra that Jonny Appleseed, a young Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer, repeats to himself in this vivid and utterly compelling debut novel by poet Joshua Whitehead.

this is not a book I would ordinarily read, however in listening to the author's reading of this story I could feel the anger, frustration and love come through. This book is raw in it's telling of Indigenous reality with regards to stigma and treatment by others who just don't care to get to know or understand. And also how as two spirited people are sometimes not even embraced by their own communities and families. This book is great to show the more difficult side of living on the fringes of 'normal' society and how cruel life can sometimes be.

Story
Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy? A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

The pace of the story picked up within the second half. I was a little disappointed at the suddenness of the ending. I could also feel for the emotions of the narrator. This could be a great story to learn about how we create boxes for people and how they are to fulfill their purpose in life. I will continue to hope that we don't have to meet the expectations others place upon us.

Story
Lee hikes mountains home to Formosan flamecrests, birds found nowhere else on earth, and swims in a lake of drowned cedars. She bikes flatlands where spoonbills alight by fish farms, and learns about a tree whose fruit can float in the ocean for years, awaiting landfall. Throughout, Lee unearths surprising parallels between the natural and human stories that have shaped her family and their beloved island.

The slow pace of the narrator and the story become a character in its telling. Chapter 13 was a great reminder of WHY we need to know our own history to enlighten us as to how far we have come and what next steps we should take.

I am so glad this is a selection for Canada Reads 2021! It speaks to inequality out of fear and tradition.
I know others have given not great reviews but I would challenge them to listen to this narrator tell the story and not fall in love with these characters. This story is definitely needed at this time if people start asking the questions this author unveils about our society and culture today.

It has been great getting to know these characters, even though sometimes the narrator doesn't seem to quite get the emotion of the moment quite right.
