It's a powerful story of struggle between hope and hopelessness, of how people can be as vicious as nature itself, from which we stem and to which we are bound. Great writing and production!

A Study on Empathy
Reviewed: 2019-10-06
This book delves on what it means to be human, as well as on the ability of feeling empathy and compassion for the other, that is, for someone or something that is not you or of your own kind. This seems to be at least as relevant today as it was during the Cold War when it was written. Having said that, the screenplay written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples based on this book for Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) is a much superior work of art and dives deeper into this theme of empathy and humanity.

The outcast youth Ishmael, succumbing to wanderlust during a dreary New England autumn, signs up for passage aboard a whaling ship. The Pequod sails under the command of the one-legged Captain Ahab, who has set himself on a monomaniacal quest to capture the cunning white whale that robbed him of his leg: Moby-Dick. Story
Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

A thrilling dystopia!

The best dystopian novels are those that in a way describe our own societies and show to which extent and how fast things can change for the worse. Atwood's description of thoughts, feelings, and the overall psychological state of her characters makes for a very interesting read. Danes' narration adapts Atwood's style almost perfectly to the audiobook format. Thrilling!

A superb story of love, grief, and search for meaning. As true today as it was more than 3 thousand years ago. The Epic is followed in this audiobook by an essay analyzing the story, which I found helpful even if a little repetitive.

Story
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Story
The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the story introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. Follow the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of the 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates.
