Digory and Polly meet and become friends one cold, wet summer in London. Their lives burst into adventure when Digory's Uncle Andrew, who thinks he is a magician, sends them hurtling to...somewhere else. They find their way to Narnia, newborn from the Lion's song, and encounter the evil sorceress Jadis, before they finally return home.

The Magician's Nephew is a kind of origin myth for the world of Narnia that can be explored in the other six books of CS Lewis' series. Although a children's story, it has layers of meaning, some profound reflections on the human condition, mixed in with adventure and wit that appeals to all ages.

We enjoy listening to these on long drives with our kids, and all of us enjoy the stories together. In this audio version, Kenneth Branagh reads -- sometimes actors are not good readers, but Branagh narrates the story superbly.
