Story
Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

Sounds like robot
Reviewed: 2019-12-31
Difficult to listen to the narrator. He pauses after each word, making it sound like the words are chopped and pasted together or like a robot is reading. Sounds like individual words, not a sentence. So distracting. Otherwise the stories are interesting. They don’t go too in depth, just a brief overview of different cultures and time periods. Kind of disappointing.

Story
FBI Agent Emmy Dockery is absolutely relentless. She's young and driven, and her unique skill at seeing connections others miss has brought her an impressive string of arrests. But a shocking new case - unfolding across the country - has left her utterly baffled. The victims all appear to have died by accident, and have seemingly nothing in common. But this many deaths can't be coincidence. And the killer is somehow one step ahead of every move Dockery makes. How? To FBI Special Agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, everyone in the FBI is a suspect - particularly Emmy Dockery.

Letdown

Unlike the first story, the serial killers voice was not creepy or taunting. The description of the killings were not scientifically detailed or unique. The twists were minimal and expected. I felt like there was no escalation or climax either. This book is like a anti government terrorist book, which is nothing like the meticulous serial killer in a cat and mouse game from the first book. There was so much romance also. Very disappointing.

Unoriginal, not suspenseful, not awful to listen to
Reviewed: 2019-05-15
I listen to lots of books in this genre (serial killer, female investigators). I don’t find this one interesting or original. There wasn’t any creative killings or plot lines. It didn’t make me feel scared or suspenseful at all. Just a basic plot line of finding a serial killer. The scenes that were suppose to be suspenseful had minimal build up and weren’t powerful. The protagonist wasn’t overly likeable or interesting either. Didn’t really relate to her or care about her. I wouldn’t say it was an awful story, just really nothing special. Didn’t really care enough to finish but I did just as something to listen in the background.

First half intriguing, then it was drawn out
Reviewed: 2019-02-18
I think this book would have been good it if was half as long. The dynamic in the family was really interesting in the beginning, especially the mother and daughter. Then it just got really drawn out and repetitive, almost like it had many climaxes of the same thing that never really peaked. The last few chapters were very boring with unnecessary detail that was not filled with any suspense.

Story
Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden. In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious “butterflies” - young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

Enjoyable book, potentially triggering, bad ending
Reviewed: 2019-02-11
The concept for the story was unique and interesting, although a big drawn out. The protagonist was likeable to an extent. I don't think it was overly reflective of what it would be like in such a psychologically disturbing place. Definite trigger warning for rape, sexual violence, and sexual coercion. The ending had so much potential, and I was expecting a big, dark twist. Alas, the twist was stupid and irrelevant. Hardly even consider it a twist I guess.

Story
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Very enjoyable and extreme
Reviewed: 2019-02-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It provided an amazing story (seriously didn't think stuff like that was possible) and overall good advice. I'd warn people the first chapter or two are heavy and detailed on child abuse and domestic violence. It adds to the story, but I wish I expected it more. I think one of the general themes of pushing yourself so hard you get extreme physical injuries isn't the best for one's future health. I saw this as a traumatized, powerless boy who grew into a man addicted to hurting himself through extreme exercise to gain the control/power his father took from his. Perhaps that is not the case, but either way it is an interesting book.
