Story
Martine is a genetically cloned replica made from Evelyn Caldwell’s award-winning research. She’s patient and gentle and obedient. She’s everything Evelyn swore she’d never be. And she’s having an affair with Evelyn’s husband. Now, the cheating bastard is dead, and both Caldwell wives have a mess to clean up. Good thing Evelyn Caldwell is used to getting her hands dirty.

When I read the storyline I thought maybe, maybe it will be interesting, maybe it will be entertaining. In the end it was much more. It asked interesting questions about morality, about responsibility, about love, without presuming to have the answers. I was provoked to consider my own assumptions. And was charmed by the two broken but lovely women at the heart of this story. Also the narrator was perfect and really made it her own. Great performance, bravo!

Story
After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find - her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region. Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid.

Good story

Terrible narration. The narrator just destroyed this book for me, so woodenly over dramatic on every sentence. I wish I had given up and read a paper copy instead. The story was quite good, gothic as promised. I recommend you buy the book and read it for yourself.

Story
A tour-de-force debut novel about a Two-Spirit Indigiqueer young man and proud NDN glitter princess who must reckon with his past when he returns home to his reserve. “You're gonna need a rock and a whole lotta medicine” is a mantra that Jonny Appleseed, a young Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer, repeats to himself in this vivid and utterly compelling debut novel by poet Joshua Whitehead.

A warm wonderful homage to love and family. Joshua Whitehead doesn’t pull any punches. Not surprisingly the narration feels very genuine. Surprised by my sudden tears at the end.
