I first read this book as assigned reading during university, and thus began a life-long devotion to the works of Albert Camus. But I was not fully prepared for the emotionally powerful experience of reading The Plague during the 2020 pandemic and seeing ourselves in every page. It is beautiful, haunting, compassionate and insightful.

I read this classic as part of my goal to read the 100 top english-language classics. Branagh's performance makes you feel like you are right there on the ship listening to Charles Marlow recount his 'adventure'. I will listen to this a second time just so I can savour Joseph Conrad's beautiful word craft rendered into imminent experience by Branagh.

This first among the classics of modern literature is not only a great story in its own right, but the translation is accessible to the modern ear and the quality of the performance without equal!
