Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Dear Mr. Grisham, (if that may be a review title)

I have been listening to audible books for years as I commute to work and pursue my hobbies at home while mothering. I'm sure my records would indicate this. I have never made a review before now. This novel has resonated with me extremely. As an administrator and educator, it has brought perspective back to why we teach history and humanity. I remember reading your novels as a student, while waiting for lectures in University, and appreciating your work. This-this is your finest work. It is reflective of multiple cultures, classes and losses...and, finally, humanity.

I can only hope readers can put in perspective the sacrifices of our ancestors, and the importance of why we need to acknowledge these realities in measured retrospect.

It is so easy to forget. To not know.

I can only hope this incredible narrative serves as a warning.

Lest we forget.
