I’m not much of a fantasy novel fan, but I LOVE this series. I know the third book won’t be released for some time (just my luck) but it is still worth a read or two.
I love the characters and the world the author has created. I find the story charming and constantly entertaining. One of those books you just can’t put down.

Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.

Full disclosure: I am a white, Canadian male who loves romantic comedies. So I was very much looking forward to reading this “outrageously funny” story. Instead, it felt like reading a mock-umentary about how rich some families in Singapore are. I found the description of wealth to be alienating and a bit grotesque, not elegant and lavish. The exchanges that I think were meant to be funny only made the characters look petty and shallow. It made me glad to not be a part if that group. But there were some redeeming elements to the story; Astrid, Rachel, Nick and Collin all seemed likeable I enjoyed their individual stories. I wonder if being white means I don’t get some of the jokes in the book, which is maybe why I didn’t love it. I hear the movie is better, but I can’t say as I haven’t seen it. A good read, but don’t believe the description on the jacket.

Welcome back to the village of Ballybucklebo. Come and say hello again to Dr. O'Reilly's odd-as-two-left-feet patients; his housekeeper, Mrs. "Kinky" Kinkaid; and O'Reilly's pets: Arthur Guinness, the beer-swilling black Lab, and Lady MacBeth, the demonically possessed white cat. And of course, to young Dr. Barry Laverty. After Barry's first month as an assistant to crusty Dr. O'Reilly, he has been offered a permanent spot. But Laverty's excitement is dashed when one of his patients unexpectedly dies.

Often in a van, sometimes in a bus, occasionally in a car with broken wipers "using Bob's belt and a rope found by Paddy's Pond" to pull them back and forth, Alan and his bandmates charted new territory, and he constantly measured what he saw of the vast country against what his forefathers once called the Daemon Canada. In a period punctuated by triumphant leaps forward for the band, deflating steps backward, and everything in between.

Mr. Doyle is a gifted storyteller and a treat to listen to. I thoroughly enjoyed his anecdotes about his Canadian adventures and the insights he had regarding provincial relationships and Canadian identity. Just as good as his first book, but with a different focus.

Bought this book on the recommendation of a friend... so glad I did! An epic story, interesting characters (not too many of them), and very well written. I don’t often read fantasy novels, but this book will make you like the genre. Can’t wait to start the next one!
If there was something I didn’t like, it’s that I have so many questions! But I sense my answers are coming soon in the next book.

Better than expected! This book was surprisingly even more funny than I anticipated and it even had me a bit weepy at times. An intriguing look into the character you love, while revealing so much about the actor you probably don’t know. #Audible1
