Story
Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity. While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants.

Story
Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie.

Raw, brutal, funny, advisory.

Not sure if this is a warning or an inspiration. Tales of debauchery this honest are only normally shared after the demise of the protagonist, but I guess Mother was the protagonist after all. Thoroughly enjoyed the different voices, and you were right, Doug, Chad was made for this.

Repetitive Snorefest

The reader is clearly a pro, but boy does he send you to sleep. This book is meant to be an influential classic, believe me it’s dreadful. I’m a science fiction lover, all kinds of fiction lover, but there’s nothing here for entertainment or education. I’m sure there’s a big fat allegory there somewhere, if you can stay awake long enough to find one. I finished it like I do my push ups, with a determined grimace followed by a protein shake. Don’t be like me, walk on, nothing to see here.

I’m not a surfer. This was a beautiful and inspirational book for any man of any age. It did make me yearn for my youth, but it’s never too late for almost anything, although I’d still give surfing the swerve. Lovely voice, nice pace and a really sweet slice of life. Highly recommended.
