A compassionate look at mental illness, from the perspective of a psychiatrist. It was interesting to learn what a psychiatrist does, as these professionals are often illusive when navigating the health care system. As a patient, friend, and family member of people with mental illness, it has been a bit of a mystery.

I would not want this job! and have a new-found respect for the professionals who work this field after reading this book.

It was an interesting read, for sure, and provides readers with concrete examples of a variety of mental illnesses, complete with historical synopses and information.

It was difficult to get past the narrator's voice, and perhaps if I'd read the story, rather than listened to it, it might have been more tolerable. As it was, knowing people with disfigurements and/ or disabilities, the story seemed too unrealistic. I know, I know, it's fiction, but when I read, especially about topics like this, it's usually to get a feeling of connection, and this didn't make me feel connected to the character, at all. It was a "hero's journey" plot, with an unlikely hero, and I suppose it's a good book for youth; it just didn't hold credibility with me.

This book had been recommended to me several times over the years, but I'd never read it. I'm glad I did! It's one of those books that will stay with you forever. Put it on your "Must Read" list. It's timeless.

I'll admit I'm a bit of a book snob, so that's why my ratings aren't higher! Overall, this was an entertaining read, and I enjoyed the performance. I did, however, have most of it figured out fairly early on, but still, it was riveting enough to continue listening. If pop thrillers are your genre, then this is a great book!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, so was pleasantly surprised. The author's struggles were something I could relate to. It was the kind of book to glean something from, and to make you think about your own life and situation. It was heartfelt, and made me feel like going back to therapy!

I heard about the movie, before the book. When I started it, I thought, Oh here we go, another hero's adventure, but as the story progressed, it turned out to be so much more. After I finished it, I googled Richard Wagamese and found out he'd passed away, and cried. He should have lived to write more.

Found it interesting, but predictable. It was a good listen as it didn't require a great deal of attention to follow.
