Mr. Lansdale wrote a superb story on friendship, loss, and living well, good times or not. Throw in a clever mystery, a hero with an unusual ability to see past crimes in loud sounds, and 2 loyal friends to create an unforgettable audio listen. Couldn’t stop listening to see what happens next! The narrator is an extraordinary vocal artist as each character has his own voice. Time well spent!

As I’ve always been drawn to old, abandoned landmarks, buildings, I decided to give this a go. Quite an engaging tale about a century old circus building supposedly haunted by a murder years ago. Narrator did a commendable job, no difficulty in keeping characters straight. However the stilted dialogue of Pippas adoptive father, and that of her fiancé, Forrest, are just a bit over the top! Straight out of Charles Dickens! They do remind the listener of Ebeneezer Scrooge, mean spirited bullies. The plot developments, insights into circus life kept me engaged throughout, enjoyable!

Froelich, a “retired” police detective now a private one, is hired to find a lost sister and a lost witness to a 30 year old marine mystery. Along the way, reader discovers the rudiments of Norwegian immigration laws. Not always pretty. The cause of the fiery blaze on the ferry was never solved despite govt, and police reports, Relatives of those killed in fire accuse police and govt, of corruption and incompetence. I found the digging into old accounts of an incident to be fascinating as the past comes to life. I was glued to my IPad throughout story!

Amystery within a mystery.

A story of stories with hidden meanings depicting literary rules of writing detective fiction. This book is rather dated at first as it requires patience to listen until the final, unexpected revelation. Nothing is as it appears in the tale! The narrators pacing sets the emotional mood, calm which gives the tale a greater impact. Unusual novel requiring time to absorb, appreciate its cleverness.

Story lived up to reviews and then some! Just an amazing, well writt3n, and well performed mystery in a small seaside town in Tasmania. Vanishing Falls, the village in story, has modern problems, unemployment, and drug addiction. The characters are so cunningly revealed, that the listener is drawn on as bit by bit, secrets, present and past, are revealed . The tension , excitem3nt crank up as e@ch chapter reveals new, startling info. Also interesting is how this talented writer shifts power in relationships. Th3 meek morph into strong characters with a deft subtlety. This was an adventure not to be missed. Hope feisty heroine Joelle reappears soon, as I won’t forget her! Don’t miss this one!

Intriguing, police drama.

An English teenage girl is abducted in a Greek resort after sneaking out of apartment to meet a local boy. No trace of her was found .DC. Louisa Smith was part of the original investigation, and now , 10 years later she is DCI. The young woman, now 25, is found during a local raid. Her name is Scarlet Rainsford who was kidnapped in Greece. Now DCI Louisa is heading the investigation into Scarlett’s disappearance, and now reappearance. Scarlett’s parents don’t seem exactly overjoyed to see their long lost daughter, nor does she really want to reunite with them. The parents didn’t share all information they knew with police, then or now. The mystery does not stop with Scarlets reappearance, nor her mysterious, cold parents. Intriguing, exciting , twists and turns throughout listen. Policing details, such as reading out report numbers, DOBs etc. did not detract from story for me. They added authenticity to an exceptional police procedural. Looking for other works by this author.

Loved this book, although not always fond of Cass’ drug and light fingered habit. At least she’s honest about it, and a complex tough lady to boot. Enjoyed watching her grow from inner torment to feeling more empathy. The mystery was intriguing throughout! Only wish the book was longer. Writing is clear, often dark, lyrical.

A former Internal Affairs investigator is released from prison with few prospects for employment. Employment agency offers him a job telemarketing. He de lines, and is soon offered a chance to use his kills as a policeman to find a young man who took a boat to a nearby island, and did not return. Thorkild Aske takes on the job, on the eve of a North Sea gale. While on the island, he sees the corpse of a mutilated young woman. The corpse is snatched away by a man who appears out of the water. No one believes Aske who is prone to opioids to deal with f@cial scarring, despair. Descriptive writing of the sea, both above and below water, and police procedures . A tad unusual plotting, but well worth a listen. I enjoyed it, especially the job offer in telephone customer service! How like North America that is.!

Best of the series!

Exciting police procedural with colourful, familiar characters. There are complex plots, and numrerous twists and unexpected events to keep listeners interest. Hesitated at first to buy it, because hate to think of prisoners trapped underground, but glad I stayed with story. The ending was especially satisfying. Well done, Howard Linskey, and hats off to your narrator too!

Really worthwhile listen.

This one grabbed right from the start, and my interest never flagged. Though flawed, Beauregard tries hard to lead an honest life, be a decent husband, loving father, businessman. However, ia lapse of judgment and hard times, set him and his family on road to disaster. All the characters become so real, you can “see” them. It’s just a fully realized story, not just about cars, crime, hard choices. It’s also about love, caring among friends, family. I especially liked the ending, especially as I believed Beau would not survive last confrontation with Lazy crime boss. Just a great story about choices which determine who we are. Hope this author has a sequel coming soon.
