note: The recording quality wasn't great which is the only reason for the 4 star performance rating.

this book is short but it isn't easy, its not sanitized, it lays bare the reality of this world from a uniquely difficult perspective. anyone who pretends God, faith, war, or sexuality is easy is lying to themselves and others, and this book does not portray any as simple. it is not the story of a hero, it is the story of brokenness in a broke world and wrestling with that brokenness and the God of the brokenness in the same spirit Jacob wrestled, this book was an exercise is empathy for others, mercy on myself, and will hopefully lead to a great willingness for compassion. I am thankful to God David's story doesn't end where this story does, and I thank God David had the courage to bare himself so vulnerably, especially in his position. This book is not happy, but it is brimming with the kind of honesty the church and the world desperately need more of.

I have never been to war, I will likely never know the kinds of hardships David has, but still I found parts of myself and my own struggles, insecurities and sins.

in my reflection echo the world's of my favourite author Shūsaku Endō in Silence

"Christ did not die for the good and beautiful. It is easy enough to die for the good and beautiful; the hard thing is to die for the miserable and corrupt."

I was expecting good content, so far my experience with Great Courses has ranged from good to Excellent and this one is a concise, diverse, engaging and informative demonstrating the grace and reason Prof. Principe is advocating for and I believe in.

while I was a little confused at first, not knowing exactly what I was getting into with One's penultimate work having only heard "Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids" in the past. It was a little slow and confusing at first, this novel was a "slow burn", but deeply thoughtful and engaging. I am glad I took the time to see this book through.

A lot of good touch points were crammed into this little book, far from comprehensive, but a good fun broad brush look at caffeine from its history to its brain chemistry.

He is a lecturer, and these are done as lectures, that is where the performance suffers a little, I also found his pace excruciatingly slow but of course you can always speed it up. But that's the only bad part!

An excellent survey of mesoamerican indigenous studies, Dr Barnhart choses to focus on the people of Mesoamerica rather than the people who unveiled it. Tackling each subject from a variety of angles, and forthcoming about his own biases, it was interesting, honest and comprehensive from start to finish,.. well as comprehensive as 6000 yrs of history can be in compact into 23 hours.

I certainly recommend this listening!

As fascinating as all of his books are I found the information in this one to be more applicable than some of his others. It is far from self help, he isn't telling you how this can improve your life, you gotta figure out how to apply the information yourself, but it was excellent, I think of the concept of "desirable difficulty" and what that means in my life and has been great for giving context to me an my brother who are both dyslexic.

I have been spending a lot of time recently on 20th century Japanese literature, and with that exploring large themes in Japanese history. This great collection of historical fiction brought to life the folk hero Musashi on many dimensions and the details and overall length of the story I think helped to give me a better understanding of early Edo Japan. The performance was excellent and they story thoroughly enjoyable, 53.5 hours well spent!

I do not think this book could be more timely, and I wish I took it's lessons more seriously, I am working on that by the grace of God.

An excellent expansion on a great pithy thought of Dallas Willard.

Fully enthralled in the fiction philosophy of Chesterton I found this book very very enjoyable, though I must say I did not enjoy Chesterton's end as much as his journey the means may justify the ends on this one and the presentation left nothing wanting.

Not sentimental or prideful/egotistical "self-help" nonsense, a very good practical and meaningful look into our brain and the practices that have helped me be a better version of myself.

Very helpful, engaging, well written and well presented.

Thank you Drew Dyck, I appreciate you for more that just your Dyck Picks now!
