A modern tragedy of the fatal flaw & an astute autopsy of marriage. A reading I will likely listen to again soon.

Shameful that in 2019 there's no awareness of the Elliotts' racism. Read Five Wives instead.

This is more of the logbook of a mind constantly venturing out into the seas of thought than a journal of events or even relationships. Sontag's irrepressible curiosity gives it its verve, and her reflections on writing will keep me coming back to this for years.

This ranks among the top ten--maybe even the top five--books I've ever read in a lifetime as an avid reader. Incredibly intelligent, humane, insightful, and beautiful.

Endlessly entertaining without feeling gimmicky or trite. The kind of book that colors your perceptions of a place or even an epoch in your life, especially when walking Edinburgh with the narration in your ears. #Audible1

A translation that makes the oldest epic on the planet seem urgent. I cannot recommend this enough. I also really enjoy the narrator saying "Iliados" rather than "Iliad"--it's the little things that make a good narration.

This may not be the best way to encounter the Inferno for the first time, but for anyone looking to brush up their knowledge of it or experience it in a new way this is a worthwhile purchase. Especially with poets like Heaney and Gluck reading, this is a good way to connect the poetry of past and present. In short, despite the gruesomeness of some of the cantos, these readings make the Inferno a text of pleasure.

Nightwood is somehow what you always dream the European you will fall in love will be like--beautiful, bitter, erotic, too intelligent, even a little repulsive. Of course, you got this idea from books in the first place, but until you read Nightwood, you have never read all this distilled into a single book so potent that a few sentences can make you feel drunk... or as you imagine being drunk is... Yes, in many ways this is a book about imagination and desire and Gemma Dawson's slightly smoky narration doesn't hurt that tone. #Audible1

It's not that often that I find myself giving 5 stars to a "runaway bestseller." While popularity probably should not be a condemnation, it shouldn't be equated with worth. In this case, however, the hype isn't really "hype," not only because Westover tells an utterly intriguing story but also because she is so intelligent and composed in her thinking about life, family, and education. A book I will both read and listen to again. #Audible1
