I returned Death on the Downs because it was not worth my precious credit. I usually read reviews before purchasing however there weren’t any for the audiobooks #2 to the end of this series.

I plodded along to the end hoping things would get better. After reading/listening I went online to find reviews of these books in print and saw that there were other readers who had come to the same conclusion as I did.

I won’t be listening to any more in this series because the story lines are so implausible and the characters who I enjoyed in the first book of the series became more shallow and less likeable. Their friendship did not develop and deepen and they actually became detached. Disappointing.

The writing and narration are superb and the book is thoroughly enjoyable. The main character and “her minions” is well developed over the series. The atmosphere of the time and places is portrayed throughout and adds another layer of interest.

It was interesting to watch DS Waters grow into his role as sergeant and what eventually lies waiting for the previous Team Smith. The story started out with a seemingly predictable type of murder but then turned unto an unexpected avenue. As a bonus, guess who we meet again? Another great story with fantastic narration.

I have now listened to the first three books in the series and they are getting better all along. Someone likened this series to another favourite - Gamache by Louis Penny - and I agreed. The narration is also fantastic. I am looking forward to the next one.

I am so pleased to have come upon this series of books. It was very well written with a good flow and forward motion. The narrator did an outstanding job of illustrating the various characters and made for an enjoyable listen. I am looking forward to the next book.

The narrator had a very aggressive style of narration. There were no subtle nuances and the whole story was almost shouted. The characters voices were varied very little and were not pleasant to listen to.

The story was silly quite a lot of the time. There was humour and some interesting backstory of early motion picture production. It seemed to go on and on and it was a relief when it finally concluded. Perhaps it would have been more enjoyable if there had been a different narrator.

I found myself getting frustrated with the actions of the main character. They were often such immature decisions. She still has a lot if growing up to do. There are so many knowledgeable people around from whom she could enhance her gardening skills yet she is so hesitant to ask for advice. I also don’t understand why she is not carrying her cell phone with her - there were so many places in this and the other stories in the series when this would have been of benefit and it is unusual behaviour for someone her age.

That being said I enjoyed the writing of this author and her ideas. Someone mentioned ‘ageism’ and the references to old persons could be replaced with other descriptors - after all age is relative and many of us old-timers do enjoy reading mysteries 😉.

The narrator is excellent and contributes much to the enjoyment of the books.

I enjoyed the first instalment of this cozy gardening mystery. It was nice to see the transition of the main character from an unconfident young woman to one with evolving confidence and connection to a new role model and evolution of new skills. The cat is a fun touch. The narrator is very skilled. I look forward to the next book in the series.

This story is rather light in character although the writing is not bad. However I was unable to get past the 5th chapter. I think with a better narrator I would have completed the book and have tackled at least one more in the series.
