I started out enjoying the book and characters and was disappointed in the turn the character of Miss. Seaton took. She became vague and adrift - she denied much if what was going on instead of being an active participant and it is a wonder that she didn’t die early on in the story. The ending is also unsatisfactory and I resent being forced into sequels where you have to purchase the other half of the story that you have already bought. I do enjoy reading series like those of Loiuise Penny were the characters and settings continue to evolve however the current story line comes to a conclusion.

This book was certainly an eye opener and a potential life changer. Who knew that we were being poisoned by the food industry. Well worth a read. Great narrator. Insightful and knowledgeable author.

I have really tried to get through and like these books. Unfortunately the main character is so very unlikable. I was anticipating a strong female lead and all I got was a whiney pseudo man without any redeeming qualities. The narrator is not the problem with either book - it’s the story lines themselves and the very shallow and insignificant characters.

Louise Penny has achieved another brilliant instalment in this wonderful series. Living in northern Ontario her description of the evolution of spring resonated with me. I highly recommend this fantastic author and am looking forward to the next book.

I was thoroughly enjoying this well written mystery and was drawing to the end of the story - stopping just shy of the conclusion - when it took an unexpected twist and became a whole new mystery. This one evolved brutally slowly and I really didn’t want to continue listening. However it kept playing in the background until after many chapters it snapped back into focus (final 20 chapters) and I listened to the satisfactory end.

Unfortunately this book was a significant disappointment - a lot of fluff without any substance. The storyline was unbelievable and the characters were shallow. The main character, Viola, described her style of writing as bodice rippers without a lot of depth however they sold and she didn’t care what the critics said as she laughed all the way to the bank - perhaps a reflection of the author‘s attitude.

The narrator was excellent and probably the main reason I made it through the ten chapters that I did.

There is a loud and annoying hissing noise at the beginning of these chapters. No fun while listening over the car radio!

It was very nice to find a five book set of these charming stories for one credit. The narrator was agonizingly slow and had an extremely limited range of voices. The main character, Gertrude, was given the most energetic of voices and that was limited in range the remaining characters were difficult to differentiate between and were presented with very little and variation and animation - they pretty much sounded the same. Frequently throughout my listen I considered stopping and asking for a refund of my credit. It was difficult to listen to the entire set because of the voice, however the characters and stories made me go on. The author did a nice job of developing the characters and weaving the storylines together. It is unfortunate that the narrator could not convey the liveliness and humour of the overall story in a more entertaining and easy to listen to format.

I really enjoyed this book. Living in Northern Ontario I understood and could feel all the snow references. I also think that this should not be the first book that is read in this awesome series because there is minimal background information given for the characters and references. These books are best read in the order of publication since each book continues to build the characters and enrich the story line.

The narration is very difficult to listen to because the voices ascribed to the various characters sound so similar and many are truly annoying. Makes it difficult to follow the story line especially once at murder mystery event.
