Publisher's Summary

Blackstone Publishing presents a new recording of this immensely popular book.

One of the most celebrated classics of the twentieth century, Orwell’s cautionary tale of a man trapped under the gaze of an authoritarian state feels more relevant now than ever before.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police, a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities’ will and people live tepid lives by rote.

Winston Smith, the hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him. He knows even as he continues to pursue his forbidden love affair that eventually he will come to destruction.

The year 1984 has come and gone, yet George Orwell’s nightmare vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is still the great modern classic of negative Utopia. It is a prophetic and haunting tale that exposes the worst crimes imaginable: the destruction of freedom and truth.

"It is probable that no other work of this generation has made us desire freedom more earnestly or loathe tyranny with such fullness." (New York Times, 1949)

Thought provoking

The first 1/3rd of the book is my favorite. where we learn about the world and the most thought provoking concepts are brought to life.
The last 2/3rds of the book isnt as interesting as we just follow the protagonist living in the world.
The narrator was very good. I would definitely listen to it again.

Good

I had a difficult time getting through this one. Such a hopeless tale! Simon Prebble makes it as enjoyable as possible, but this is not a "fun" book.

Timely for 2018

Listening to this classic in 2018 was a great experience. It had been a long time since I read the book but I had been wanting to re-read it. Listening is a preferred end of the day activity these days. In the story, the technology may be dated (which you can explain away by the state of the world), but the issues are current, including the establishment Slogans in the context of the real world climate of tyrants or would-be tyrants masquerading as populists. The performance was smooth and kept me listening.

Incredible!

This story is wonderfully told by the reader, and incredibly written by Orwell. Once the book was finished, one can not help but notice how terrifying similar our world is to theirs, only we use different title, for example Cancel Culture is our thought police.

Great novel excellent narration.

1984 is a classic masterpiece that should be read by everyone at least once in their lifetime. Reading this book in decades after it was written makes it leave a sting of existential dread.

listening to this book from its excellent narrator makes it all the more engaging. He does a great deal of changing in his voice so that you can distinguish dialogue from narration without paying it much mind.

The narrator was great, story excellent and I was hooked waiting for the next opportunity to continue. this book is a must on here and if you aren't familiar with it not picking it up would be a mistake.

Remember Big Brother is always watching.
