Publisher's Summary

In this sports memoir, Wayne Gretzky weaves memories of his legendary career with an inside look at professional hockey and the heroes and stories that inspired him. From minor-hockey phenomenon to Hall of Fame sensation, Wayne Gretzky rewrote the record books, his accomplishments becoming the stuff of legend. Dubbed “The Great One”, he is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player who ever lived. No one has seen more of the game than he has - but he has never discussed in depth just what it was he saw.

For the first time, Gretzky discusses candidly what the game looks like to him and introduces us to the people who inspired and motivated him: Mentors, teammates, rivals, the famous and the lesser known. Weaving together lives and moments from an extraordinary career, he reflects on the players who inflamed his imagination when he was a kid, the way he himself figured in the dreams of so many who came after; takes us onto the ice and into the dressing rooms to meet the friends who stood by him and the rivals who spurred him to greater heights; shows us some of the famous moments in hockey history through the eyes of someone who regularly made that history. Warm, direct, and revelatory, it is an audiobook that gives us number 99, the man and the player, like never before.

The honesty

I really found this to be an excellent book. I appreciated learning about what goes on between players on the ice and in the dressing room.

Fine book

My only criticism is with the narrator. Please take the time to learn the correct pronunciation of the players names. Very frustrating to a real fan to hear superstars names mis-pronounced.

Lots of historical content

Wayne has helped diarize much historical content in this book - but I was hoping for more stories from behind the scenes, associated with the players of Wayne's era (the players of my youth).

Lots of great history, stories and insights

Great listen, but narrator not so much, would have been amazing if Gretz had read himself or at least someone with a bit more hockey knowledge.

Gretz is Great

I wish Wayne did the narrating on this one but it was great to hear all the stories of the game from all the different errors and some of the behind-the-scenes

Great Mix of Old and NEW Hockey Stories

I loved how Wayne mixed the old and the new hockey stories in this book. I think if Wayne was narrating the book himself there would have been more life put into a few of the stories close to him but it still was an amazing book. Well done.

So many great stories...

They say that he has a mind like an encyclopedia of hockey and even with the lofty expectations that a description like that may invoke, the book still does not disappoint.

A must for a 70s, 80s and 90s hockey fan.

Worth It

This was a good meandering yarn about some of the tidbits you only sometimes hear about.

Wayne Gretzky's story, the good and unique people he wrote about are all mentioned in a classy way, just like the Great One himself.

The only drawback was the narrator's incorrect pronunciation of French or foreign born players. This is an audible editorial miss.

Bottom line: worth it!

Great stories, not a fan of the narration

Great stories from before, during, and after the career of the greatest ever! Narrator was tough to get into, especially since he obviously doesn't know hockey.

Inside the mind of the great one.

I loved all the stories and hearing them from Wayne’s perspective is particular powerful. I’m 50 and a lifelong hockey fan. There was so much that I didn’t know about the history of the game that this book helps bring to life. The only negative was the pronunciation of some of the names and terms were off from what I’m used to from watching so much hockey. Other than that, this book is a great one. (Pun intended 😃)
