Publisher's Summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

What the critics say

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Awesome Audio Book

I love the GoT series and this audiobook is the reason I recommend people to the app! I found listening to this audiobook much easier to follow along since the voice actor gave each character their own voice. I find GoT can really bog you down with names and characters but the voice acting in this made it so much easier to understand who was saying what and follow along! Very well done!

So many mispronounced names!

I've read Game of Thrones and like the writing and storyline, but this narrator pronounces so many things incorrectly!! It irritates me incredibly and it happens frequently enough that I just can't get over it. Disappointed.

Needs more than one voice actor.

Amazing, but infinitly better if there was at least 1 male and 1 female voice actor.

Don't like the narrator

The story itself is great, but I have a really hard time getting into it with the narrator. he pronounces the names oddly (Brienne is Bri-Een for example) and gives the charectors very odd, hard to understand voices. not sure if I'll be continuing with the other books

What is with the narration

Great book but could barely listen at times. I understand there are a ton of characters to give voice to but I don't need to hear Varys slobbering through his cheeks. It's disgusting.

So good

A great story with an awesome narrator. It’s well worth one credit for the amount of enjoyment I got from this.

great!

I don't know if I'm the most reliable reviewer because I LOVE THIS SERIES, but the narrator is excellent and the book is really good. It's not the best of the series but is a great book.

th readers voices for the characters

the reader makes voices for the characters that are hard to understand. would have enjoyed it more without the voices.

great story, amazing characters.

the story line is amazing easy to follow! the narrator is ok, every women sounds like an old women or an old Irish women lol all the men's voices are very off putting. the pronunciation of some of the words is off. I wish there was more options of narrators.
