Description

A brilliant new crime novel from the beloved, bestselling, and award-winning master of the genre - and Joe Pike's most perilous case to date.

Joe Pike didn't expect to rescue a woman that day. He went to the bank same as anyone goes to the bank, and returned to his Jeep. So when Isabel Roland, the lonely young teller who helped him, steps out of the bank on her way to lunch, Joe is on hand when two men abduct her. Joe chases them down, and the two men are arrested. But instead of putting the drama to rest, the arrests are only the beginning of the trouble for Joe and Izzy.

After posting bail, the two abductors are murdered and Izzy disappears. Pike calls on his friend, Elvis Cole, to help learn the truth. What Elvis uncovers is a twisted family story that involves corporate whistleblowing, huge amounts of cash, the Witness Relocation Program, and a long line of lies. But what of all that did Izzy know? Is she a perpetrator or a victim? And how far will Joe go to find out?

Excellent AGAIN AS USUAL

I absolutely love you books Mr. Crais. I enjoy getting into the world of Elvis Cole and Joe Pike.
If you could mix these two men together, you would have the perfect man. Thanks again.

needs a new narrator

Fantastic story, narrator not the best. Typical Joe Pike and Elvis Cole, solving the problems of the masses.

Characters do dumb things for dumb reasons.

I keep forgetting why I don't buy books from the Elvis and Pike series then I buy one and I remember. In this outing the theme seems to be characters doing stupid things for no reason. It's almost a truism for this series that in every book some damsel put herself - repeatedly - in distress in this case by repeatedly exposing herself to the same kidnappers. She ultimately needs to be rescued by the 'heroes' three times.

The climactic confrontation was utterly unnecessary. Elvis obstructs justice by deceiving federal agents on multiple occasions and Pike is so pointlessly stoic that he misses multiple opportunities to ask some basic questions that would have wrapped things up easily. I get the concepts of dramatic irony and building tension but these guys are supposed to be the best yet they act so dumb.
