Publisher's Summary
Lady Honora Parker must get engaged as soon as possible, and only a particular type of man will do. Nora seeks a mate so abhorrent, so completely unacceptable, that her father will reject the match - leaving her free to marry the artist she desires. Who then is the most appalling man in Manhattan? The wealthy, devilishly handsome financier Julius Hatcher, of course!
Julius is intrigued by Nora's ruse and decides to play along. But, to Nora's horror, Julius transforms himself into the perfect fiancé, charming the very people she hoped he would offend. It seems Julius has a secret plan of his own - one that will solve a dark mystery from his past and perhaps turn him into the kind of man Nora could truly love.

MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THE HERIONE!!
This is my first Joanna Shupe book. I am having mixed feeling about the storyline but not the author. I will read more books by her.
Lady Nora Parker the only child of the Earl of Stratton has been caught kissing and artist and her father immediately sends her to America. She is too stay with her Aunt Beatrice and Uncle James Cortland. Nora is after all the daughter of a distinguish Earl and from a aristocratic family. Her father will never allow her to marry a lowly poor artist. The story starts out in 1890 London and moves to New York city during the time of the Knickerbockers. The beginnings of the Wall Street the financial District of America. Nora wants to return home to her fiancé Robert. She comes up with a scheme to find a fake fiancé and start a scandal with him in American. Once her father hears of it he will demand her to come home to London.
Julius Hatcher is Filthy Rich one of the riches young men in New York. He is a stock magnet and knows when to buy and when to sale. His Huge Fortune, Handsome looks and is know to be a scandalous Rogue captures Nora's eye. This is the man she need to help her get back to Robert.
Well of course the two eventually find themselves sexually attracted to each other and there attraction grows each day until they explode. At first I thought maybe just maybe Nora had not given her virginity to Robert the artist. The author leads your to believe that her and Robert where just caught kissing at a ball. But we find out they did much more then kissing. Her lack of virginity does not bother Julius. He admires her for her fearlessness. But for me she comes off a bit of a immature shrew. I found myself hoping Julius whom I loved. He is a Mans Mans. would go back to his actress mistress Poppy Desmond. I don't know why I never could really like Nora. Maybe its because she is deceiving everyone in to thinking she is an innocent until nearly the end of the story. Julius has a great story and he is very well written. He save the story for me.

Bad narration, Unappealing Lady
The narrator’s voice was too harsh and made the woman sound like a fuss-budget older woman, not at all an appealing seductress. Too often Joanna Shupe’s women protagonists come across as sluts instead of beguiling enchantresses. The romantic appeal of an innocent pursued by a scoundrel with a heart of gold is missing from most of Ms Shupe’s works, including this one.

another annoying heroine
I have now attempted to listen to two Joanna Shupe novels, and I couldn't finish either. The premises of the stories are so dumb that it undermines anything that happens, and she apparently specializes in unlikeable heroines with no chemistry with the hero. Julius Hatcher & Lady Honora Parker
▪▪▪Review contains spoilers▪▪▪
Audible Escapes review. Multiple POV. The Four Hundred Series book 1 of 3. Excellent story with clever banter, very smart dialogue. I really enjoyed the narration. Trigger warnings: fire, suicide, lies.
**uncertain of the spelling of character names**
February 1890. Julius Hatcher (30) is a wall street numbers genius. His father, Warren Hatcher, committed suicide when he was 13 after he was swindled by others and his fortune was seized leaving his wife and 3 children destitute. Julius has been estranged from his mom since shortly after his father's death but he's worked hard to reinvent himself while trying to find the 3 men responsible for his father's downfall. He has 2 older sisters, Agatha and Clarissa. His mom lives with his single sister Agatha in the house with an allowance that he provides while they shun him and his money. Lady Honora Parker (20, aka Nora) is trying everything she can think of to get her father's attention. Her mom passed away when she was 7 and she's been raised by nannies since then. Her father's position in society along with his grief have kept him away from Nora. After he caught her with Robert, her long term lover, in a compromising position he sends her to his sister & brother-in-law in New York. Julius & Nora enter an agreement for him to be her fake fiancé so that her father will have her come home to London and let her be with Robert and she'll help Julius gain entry into high society to find the men responsible for his father's downfall. Their deal doesn't go as plan because they fall for each other. Robert goes to NY to win her back, sets fire to Julius's stables and then his theater. Julius finds out that Nora's uncle was one of the men that swindled his father. After the fire in the theater they spent the night together, her father shows up and forced them to marry immediately.
Epilogue September 1890, their second wedding. JP
