Publisher's Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns with book one of the compelling Flesh and Fire series - set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.

Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania - she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission - one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then...end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.

Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit - it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

What a ride!!

I am so glad that I read this after I finished the books in the Blood and Ash series, totally would have ruined that story for myself if I hadn’t. I’m really enjoying these series. Holy smokes! Great story telling, spicy will they won’t they romance, and a wonderful narrator.

High sexual tension, Enemies/Lovers, Sexy Banter

High sexual tension between these two characters, kept me wanting to hear/read more of them. I love Nyktos and his big if not a little damaged heart that he hides or at least tries to hide from everyone. Sera is a feisty and relatable character when it comes to her personality and family life (for some people). She is just as damaged and lonely as Nyktos and the development in their relationship kept pulling at my heart strings.
I LOVE the Blood and Ash series and can't wait for JLA next book in February 2022 and now I'm as in love with Flesh and Fire series.

Better than FBAA!?

I'm doing it... I'm giving this 5 ⭐️s.

Here's the thing. I went into this book already knowing it was going to be incredibly similar to From Blood and Ash. If you don't know that going in, you may not enjoy it as much.

I absolutely loved seeing the cross-over in characters (Nektos & little bitty reaver) and getting to hear from characters who were only discussed or mentioned in FBAA.

There was a similar fight to the one on the rise and the whole, I know who you are but I'm not telling you who I am. Also, the veil/training. All the questions, stabbing and chemistry between the MCs.

But I liked the differences and learning about how what happened back then including the fates, prophecy, etc. are going to affect the rest of the FBAA series

I wasn't sure I was going to like this spin off prequel series, but I love it already and can't wait for more!

Amazing!

The narrator is exceptional, the story line is riveting. Similar but different than the other story line, it’s a prequel to the other serial Jennifer writes.

Accidental guilty pleasure

I didn’t realize what kind of book this was when I first purchased it on a whim during a 2-for-1 sale. By the time I’d realized it was some kind of paranormal, sexy-time, romance fantasy, it was too late to return it… although I did try! I decided not to waste any more of my time listening to this novel. But something curiously made me come back to it. And “by gods”, I found myself compulsively listening despite my initial eye-rolling reaction to the cheesy sex scenes. The story was actually quite fun, even if there were moments of cringing at the over-the-top descriptions of the sex. If you know what you’re getting into and you enjoy this genre, you’ll likely enjoy it. And if you don’t know what you’re getting into (like me) you might find yourself enjoying it anyway! Lol
