Publisher's Summary

Children are not supposed to rescue their parents, life is supposed to be the other way around. And rescues aren't supposed to be needed on the trip out to the new colony planet Valhalla. Slow, yes. Boring, yes. Dangerous? No, the trip is not supposed to be dangerous, never has been.

When thieves attack the transport ship to steal an ancient alien artifact, and young Kaylee and her brother, Manny, are cut off from their parents, they have to stop the thieves from getting what they want, because once the thieves have the artifact, they're not leaving any witnesses.

Very entertaining 👏

Not normally my genre. The story line is predictable but very enjoyable. Well worth it

I enjoyed the story

This would be a great book for a family as there isn't any over-the-top violence. I enjoyed all the twists and turns but also that it wasn't gratuitously violent

Fun Read

Starts slow and then I couldn't put it down. Narrator, RC Bray, was excellent as always, each character truly their own.

Great first book.

Good book, especially for his first book. His books get even better with expeditionary force.

I will reread with my 13 year old son:)

This book was a lot of fun. I found it, to leave me, wanting more. This book is great for 12 and up :)
Great family fun.

Average. DNF

I picked this up because I love Craig Alanson's Expeditionary Force series so much. This is not the same. It doesn't have the humor or the interest. The narrator is decent. I'm really surprised that the average reviews are so high. Sorry, got over halfway through and did not finish.

Ok

Story was ok. Predictable, but still enjoyable. I have listened to all of the Expeditionary Force books which are excellent, this must be one of the first books by Craig Alanson.

Boring

The story feels very boring none of the characters felt interesting they were all just basic if you came here because of expeditionary force then I would just skip this book

Tough for this EXFOR reader to get through

I read this book because I loved the author’s series, EXFOR, AKA Expeditionary Force.
EXFOR is humor-packed, and this book doesn’t deliver much comedy relief until the last third of the book. I don’t understand why this was done. It makes the pacing kind of wonky and was tough to adapt to when you’re used to getting humor in each chapter from Craig Alanson.

The story was decent enough but the lack of humor of the majority of the book was a real let-down. I kept waiting for the funny parts, until they finally started...

Note to the author:

Please stick to keeping humor /comedy-relief throughout the book; it doesn’t need to be as dense as a trans-dimensional beer can cramming in an entity the size of a small moon, but at least put some it in every chapter, okay? Even if it’s a brief laugh, it _matters_. You’re good at it! Your serious stuff isn’t bad but the humor makes it so much more enjoyable.

great book and great performance

Craig alanson is one of those rare occurrances in sci fi and fantasy... no matter what he writes its always great. He is no CS Lewis, Robert Jordan, TS elliot, Tolkien, Orson Scott Card or Jules Verne (and so on) he is Craig Alanson! Out of all the books in my audible library he is always one of the first authors i remember when offering up recommendations or searching for new books to listen to. I enjoy his books just as much as one of the classics, poetry/prose and just as much if not more then many of the more current works available today.

A well written (and narrated) book will transport you to another place. Craig Alanson and MacLeod Andrews do that here in only the way they can!

Macleod Andrews did a great job. I now have one more name to search when it comes to narration. Often times the narator is just not given enough credit but can absolutely "kill" an audible release even if it is the greatest book ever written... in this case he gave it life and a dimension that ray porter, time Gerard Reynolds and Nick poehdel could not have achieved so masterfully as MacLeod Andrews did.

This author never disappoints!

Although this book was aimed at a young adult audience, it is a FUN adventure for anyone who loves science-fiction and great characters. You might also enjoy this author’s Ascendant series. If you are an adult just discovering this author, be sure to check out Craig Alanson’s exceptional and addictive Expeditionary Force series narrated by the great RC Bray, for which readers need a 6 star rating option!

if you like his other series you won't like this.

i really love the authors other series but this book seems to miss on that magic. The characters lack dimension and the story is like a space version of home alone. I really tried to give it a chance bit halfway though and all I want to do is return it.

Young Adult, but too cliche and dumbed down

Performance was ok, but the characters and dialogue were far too low level. My kids felt that the story was too dumbed down for them.

Too much like Scooby-do, "those pesky kids"

What did you like best about Aces? What did you like least?

It was kinda of fun, too much like a Scooby-Do episode. "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids"

Has Aces turned you off from other books in this genre?

I liked the Expeditionary Force books, this was just written for kids. You could always guess what would happen next.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

He performance was great, maybe a little cartoon-istic at times.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Maybe with the grand kids.

Any additional comments?

Not what I expected

Good for kids

Predictable, loaded with cliches, my ten year old loved it though.
Like a lot of mediocre sf, it imagines a future with interstellar space travel and other wonders, but is culturally reflective of the USA circa 1990.
It served well enough for a family road trip.

Story not as good as other Alanson work.

Story is mediocre but has potential. Good that the kids aren't overly precocious... a plus. The narrator's attemts at character voices though are simply terrible. The kids sound whiney. Seriously gets on my nerves.
