Publisher's Summary

Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

Audible is pleased to announce the premiere of an exciting new series, Audible Signature Classics, featuring literature’s greatest stories, performed by accomplished stars handpicked for their ability to interpret each work in a new and refreshing way. The first book in the series is Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, performed by Elijah Wood.

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this brand new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Stay tuned for more one-of-a-kind performances from actors Kenneth Branagh, David Hyde Pierce, Leelee Sobieski, and more, only from Audible Signature Classics.

What the critics say

"Elijah Wood's performance of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is my nominee for the Narrators' Hall of Fame. Wood's unself-conscious reading doesn't sound like a reading at all." ( AudioFile)

An Amazing and Surprising Combination

I never would have thought to ask for an Elijah Wood narration of Huckleberry Finn, but here we have it and it's truly a joy. Wood's narration brings so much heart and charm to a story that was already so heartfelt and charming that it makes this an essentiel reading for anyone who enjoys audiobooks.

the narration is exceptional

Of course, this book is well written but the narration takes the Audible edition over the top. We couldn't wait to finish dinner and turn on Audible to hear the next chapter and when we finished we were a bit sad to not hear Elijah Woods each night. #Audible1

Surprises at every turn

I listened to this every night before bed with my 10 year old boy. There needs to be a warning about language, I had no idea the N word was in it! That led to a lesson about why the word is so bad and why we don't say it. I decided to let him continue listening to the story even though the word was so prevalent, and I think he has a more mature understanding of racism now, having heard this historical perspective. It's important that we don't forget how people used to be treated back then. I think age 10 may have been a little early for that lesson though, and I would have preferred to see a clear content warning so I could be prepared before listening.
That said, Elijah Wood did an amazing job of narrating all the characters. He really brought the story to life. And the story itself was super entertaining. We could never predict what Huck was going to think of or run into next. A great adventure.

Great story.

An adventure that only M. Twain could write... well-written, full of humour and with a strong undertone of abolitionism. The narration by Elijah Wood is superb making this version a must listen.

Elijah was Spectacular

Elijah was Spectacular! He made the book come alive with so many voices and characters. It was truly a performance rather than a reading.

It doesn’t age well

The narration is amazing, and the story fun. However, the n word is used A LOT. I understand not editing or sanitizing the story, but it’s jarring, to the point of physically cringing and making it rather hard to listen to the story.
