Description

Instant Number-One New York Times Best Seller

"Robert Bathurst is just about perfect delivering the 16th Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novel.... Listen to all the Gamache audiobooks for maximum satisfaction." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award winner)

In All the Devils Are Here, the 16th novel by number one best-selling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light.

On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life.

When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife, Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded works of art.

It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized.

Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family.

For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books

"Bathurst superbly manipulates tone, volume, and pace to highlight this range of emotions. Paris is described beautifully, and Bathurst lingers over these descriptive passages that will speak to any traveler’s soul...." (Booklist, starred review)

She's done it again!!!!

Seven months into the 2020 pandemic, life in my home community of Kingston, Ontario had settled into a manageable rhythm with our Canadian government having made what I considered to be wise and supportive decisions that enabled me, at 74 years of age, to establish a daily rhythm that though ‘much locked down’, allowed me to continue ‘getting on’ with many of my life choices.

Though deeply grateful for my life, I found myself slipping into greater and greater emotional darkness. How might I lift myself out of the depths into which I was sinking, reconnecting with the positivity I previously had normally exuded? Thanks be to Louise Penny!!! The timing of the release of her latest work All the Devils Are Here: A Novel couldn’t have been more perfect for me! With my having read her previous 15 works, I chose to enjoy the newest storyline using Audible technology: listening rather than reading her words.! With narration adding to the incredible depth of Louise’s creativity, plot development, and organizational skills, I discovered an added perk this time ‘round: the dramatic flair of vocal interpretation resulting in even further enhancement of my enjoyment, definitely shifting my personal sadness to yet again a reason for celebration!!!

Wonderful!

This is one of my favourite Gamache books to date. A fascinating story with a brilliant narrator. As usual, Louise Penny brings our awareness to the devils that are here as a warning to be mindful of social and environmental forces at work in the background of our lives.

Lovely story

Such a lovely story. I really wish Robert Bathurst wasn’t the narrator. He does fine for Inspector Gamache but the rest of the accents are terrible. Daniel sounds like an Irishman and Jean-Guy has totally disappeared🙁

Louise Penny does it again!!

Once again I was transported into the world of Inspector Gamache. Although the story takes place in Paris instead of 3 Pines it brings you on a fascinating journey. Loved it!! But I love all of Louise Penny’s books and look forward to the next.

Well worth the wait

I was blown away by this book. It pulls together so many characters from previous books and still surprises with a unique and interesting plot line. I’m going to revisit all the previous books and enjoy again the wonderful characters and stories of Three Pines.

One of Louise Penny's best. Don't miss it.

In this book, the whole of Inspector Gamash's family is in Paris. Both his son and daughter's families live here - his daughter is married to his long-time sidekick Jean Guy - as does his God father, who is like his father. His god father is run over by a van almost immediately in the book. The layers and layers that need to be uncovered and the layers and layers of deceit are astonishing. It is a thrilling ride to the end. Of course, his own lovely family figures largely into the story.

Great Story, Interesting Plot.

I really enjoyed this book. Love the plot and the involvement of Daniel in the story. The narrator is really struggling with the accents. Might be better if he doesn't try. Daniel (French Canadian) sounds Irish. Other characters (Parisian French) sound Russian or German. I also recognize that its important to involve Reine-Marie as she is a key character. But she is not a policeperson and its weird to have her in on a lot of the investigations. Overall, another Louise Penny success!

Horrible Narration

I tried my best but after a few chapters I decided to return the book. The narration was so bad this time. I have struggled through all the books read by Mr Bathurst and can’t understand why Gamache (and Beauvoir for that matter) speaks with a British accent.
And the Parisians! Why on earth did they have to speak English with a French accent?
I got so frustrated and had to give up.

Okay story but poor choice of narrator

I didn’t think this book was up to Louise Penney‘s usual standard. The story was interesting but it had several improbable elements and the family dynamics were overly melodramatic, especially the interactions between inspector Gamache and his son Daniel.

Although the narrator Robert Bathurst has a pleasant rich voice, I found his plummy English accent to be annoyingly unsuited to this story about Quebecois and French people. Above all, why would he speak the part of Jean-Guy (Gamache’s son-in-law), a man who was raised in “the east end of Montreal”, with what to my ears sounds like a faintly Cockney accent? Surely the producers of this audiobook could have found a Canadian - preferably a Quebecois - who could give the character’s voices more authenticity.
