Publisher's Summary

The eighth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Because, my dear Max, you dance on the edge of darkness ... and I don't think it would take very much for you to dance my way.

When an old enemy appears out of nowhere with an astonishing proposition for Max - a proposition that could change everything Max is tempted. Very tempted.

With an end to an old conflict finally in sight, it looks as if St Mary's problems are over with. Can they all now live happily ever after?

As everything hangs in the balance, Max and St Mary's find themselves engulfed in tragedies worse than they could ever imagine.

Is this the end?

What the critics say

"A carnival ride through laughter and tears with a bit of time travel thrown in for spice...readers will be impatient for later instalments." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Taylor has written a madcap and very funny hodgepodge of a novel whose pacing and humour is reminiscent of a Simon Pegg-Edgar Wright film." ( Booklist)

A good story but difficult to get through

I am a fan of this Jodi Taylor series. I like the plucky, imperfect heroine and the cast of characters as they careen through the plots of this series of books. I ordered 'The Rest is History' and 'An Argumentation of Historians' together, and by mistake, I listened to the 'Argumentation' book first. This is the best way to do it, and I recommend that everyone listen to 'Argumentation' first--It gives the reader an advantage in perspective that makes the dark plot of this book endurable and more enjoyable.
There's really nothing wrong with the plot or the story, but it is dark enough that the story brings the reader too close to the tragedies of life that most of us are enduring or will soon experience. I listen to these books to escape from all that! ;-)
First-rate reading from Zara Ramm, as usual! Keep up the good work, Jodi--I look forward to volume 10.
