Description

Welcome to Arkham County. Population: 749,824. But that number’s dropping all of the time....

Lying northeast of Massachusetts, just south of Hell, Arkham County is somewhere you find yourself, not somewhere you ever mean to go. Once you do find it though, you'd better get used to living there, as you may be there for however long you have left to live.

From within the walls of Arkham’s asylum, reclusive writer Randolph Carter tells the story of orphan Violet Flintock, who arrives in Arkham County in search of her own history only to be instantly greeted by the bloody realities of this small town, whose foundations are built from the lore and mythology of HP Lovecraft.

In this Audible Original production, Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada, Fortitude) leads a cast to introduce you to the horrific, bizarre and just plain weird world of Arkham County. This HP Lovecraft-inspired tale will delight fans and those unfamiliar with his wild, surreal and terrifying horror stories.

Just Wow!

I am not a huge lovecraftian fan, but the performance is exquisite. Beautifully acted and wonderfully dark. I really enjoyed this experience.

perfect story

all the favorite names and characters, good storyline. only gripe; on some parts I felt I was listening to a movie without the little extra visual to fill in the few details I was wondering at.

but definitely keeping it. full of atmosphere.

Horrifying Entertaining

I enjoyed this a lot. My only downside is that sometimes the music and sound drowns out the words and makes it harder to follow at times.

Wild

This is difficult to rate. If you are a Lovecraft fan or are familiar with the characters, you have an advantage over the rest of us. You will recognize what's going on more easily. If you are like me and taking your first step into this crazy Lovecraft world, you will probably be a little lost.

First, the voices of the characters Violet Flintock and Morrigan Lee are completely indistinguishable from each other. I could distinguish between Herbert West and Walter, but for the first several chapters, I believed Violet's events were the same as Morrigans, I believed them the same people, so I believed Violet was the one working with Herbert. But that was Morrigan. The saving grace was that Violet's character is slightly more meek than Morrigans, so when I finally put it together that they were different characters, it was a big "aha" moment, and that's when it started making sense a little better.

Stanly Tucci's Randolph Carter made it a worthwhile listen, he, of course, is recognizable every time. You know who he is, and it's fun to discover progressively what he gets up to.

I found it distasteful that virtually all of the young female characters conduct themselves with a casual and timid flippancy. I felt like this made them appear inferior to the male characters, who carried themselves with a confident superiority, with the exception of Walter, who is pretty whiny. Maybe this H.P Lovecraft guy was a little misogynistic, and that accounts for it. But the flippancy in the ladies makes them come across as immature and spiteful, which is an unfortunate underlying echo throughout the themes. The Witch lady, (Livinia?) was confident, but I think she was older.

The actors gave their lines confusingly at times, putting emphasis on the wrong words. That's my opinion. "You don't HAVE to tell me," I think was supposed to be "You DONT have to tell ME," for instance. But I liked the idea of Arkham County. I want to see more of these types of things. It was fun, it was fresh! It can be built and improved upon as the genre gains momentum.

Where is the nuclear and the crawling?

My heart! My soul! Whereupon have they put the body and soul of sweet chaos? Where will the thousand faces and endless clarions of the servants of the blind god be heard if not in bounded but boundless Arkham?! Past the key and the gate! Past the salt and sea, high priest ,and mother! Yes, I know the sleeping priest is not heard. But there are other stories where his servants speak! Where?! Where may I bask in the blindness and the voice!? In the dreamer and the dreaming and the dreamt and the destruction and horror and wonder of the unnameable? The roiling and toiling and laughing and crying of the herald!? Alone… they left me alone! What matters the chess game if you forget the board and the white and the black! All are but pieces where the player and the speaker are left for dead for the cosmically mute and empty horrors that thirsts for nobody! Speak to me lord and messenger! We await thee so. We await thee so! Where art thou my fool; my idiot? Where? Where? Where?!

Fantastic Story, Terrible Audio Levels

I'll open by saying, Stanley Tucci is a beautiful gift to the world, and was phenomenal in this audible production.

Also, I think there were some really great ideas in the story, but the presentation fell a bit flat. I had a very hard time distinguishing some of the characters (especially the female voices), and spent a lot of the time a bit lost in regards to the story. There were many times when the background sound, special effects and music were outrageously loud, forcing me to turn the audio down, just to have to crank it back up again because I couldn't hear the speaking parts. I also didn't understand a word of what Brown Jenkins said. Many times, the background audio was louder than the voices, which made it impossible to hear.

All that said, I believe the story was great, I just really wish more thought would have been put into the sound mixing for the final product. I love audio plays, this one just had a lot of problems.

A slow burn of a Lovecraftian radio drama

This is not an audiobook. It's more akin to a high production radio drama. At times even overly produced. The sound effects and background audio is often deafening compared to the voice actor's dialogue.

With the exception of the incomparable Stanley Tucci, it was tricky to differentiate many of the characters during the first half. And I found the main characters to be downright whiny most of the time. But when you get to the second half, action picks up, stories begin to interweave, and the true horrors start to creep up.
