Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best seller and USA Today Book of the Year, soon to be a major motion picture starring Emily Blunt.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Every day the same

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She's even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Until today

And then she sees something shocking. It's only a minute until the train moves on, but it's enough. Now everything's changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

What the critics say

"The Girl on the Train has more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl.... The Girl on the Train is liable to draw a large, bedazzled readership too.... The Girl on the Train is full of back-stabbing, none of it literal." (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)

"The Girl on the Train marries movie noir with novelistic trickery...hang on tight. You'll be surprised by what horrors lurk around the bend." (USA Today)

"Like its train, the story blasts through the stagnation of these lives in suburban London and the reader cannot help but turn pages.... The welcome echoes of Rear Window throughout the story and its propulsive narrative make The Girl on the Train an absorbing read." (The Boston Globe)

Easy and catchy story

Super easy read, fun to listen to. Story grew with each chapter, and the ability to sympathize with the protagonist even though she was rather unstable was a mark of how clever the writing was.

thought it was boring

It lacked character and plot depth. felt like I'm listening to an alcoholic complaining about her marital issuesl

Good build up, decent pay off, ending could have been condensed

Overall I thought the plot was interesting, the writing felt very natural and personable, and the voice acting was very good (however one of the voices I wasn’t too keen on but that can’t be helped).

I thought the build up of the plot was good and that it was detonated between the three characters very well. Only issue was once you figured the mystery out in your own head it felt like it took forever to get to a point where the actual characters figured it out in their own heads.

Great Narration-called the end 3hrs left

This isn't a story I will remember forever, but I enjoyed the characters the author created and thought about them between reads.

Enjoyable

Very enjoyable listen with excellent narration. Light years better than the awful movie! I recommend.

Terrible recording

I read the book which was great. I went on a road trip with my friend and downloaded the audio version. The beginning of each Chapter was cut off which made it really confusing to determine which character was being represented... very important to know. The only reason we could follow what was happening was because I could pause it and explain it to my friend. It was difficult even for me to follow. Anyway, the audio version was disappointing but it was a really exciting book.

Great Perfromance of an enthralling mystery.

Guided by an unreliable narrator, the story is full of twists and turns and keeps you guessing. The main character is infuriating at times but her realistic experience of alchoal addiction and ptsd makes her feel real. The book can be summed up as "the things men put us through" and I'd definitely recommend it.

Great "Read!"

I decided to listen to this book long after the hype of it had died down and I had completely forgotten all I had heard of this novel in passing (I also never watched the movie). While the story was entertaining, unfortunately, I was able to figure out rather early on who did it, which is always disappointing for me as I like to be able to keep guesing right up until the killer is revealed.

Trigger warning for alcoholism. Story ok

I liked the connection to the trains. Just got back from a trip to the UK and did enjoy the public transport system. I could hear the hustle and bustle of the stations while imagining the story. Plot was a bit predictable. But an enjoyable listen.
