Publisher's Summary

2017 Winner of the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction

'She throws her head back and pushes her chest forward and lets go a huge blast right into the centre of his body. The rivulets and streams of red scarring run across his chest and up around his throat. She'd put her hand on his heart and stopped him dead.'

Suddenly - tomorrow or the day after - girls find that with a flick of their fingers, they can inflict agonizing pain and even death.

With this single twist, the four lives at the heart of Naomi Alderman's extraordinary, visceral novel are utterly transformed, and we look at the world in an entirely new light. What if the power to hurt were in women's hands?

What the critics say

"Electrifying! Shocking! Will knock your socks off! Then you'll think twice, about everything." (Margaret Atwood)
" The Power is a subtly funny, lyrical and utterly subversive vision of an impossible future. As all the best visionaries do, Alderman shines a penetrating and yet merciful light on to our present and the so many cruelties in which we may be complicit." (A. L. Kennedy)
"Alderman is a fluent and powerful writer." ( Sunday Times)

Started great...

It started great, then plummeted into boring and disjointed. It became a chore to finish. Some of the character's voices were screechy and grating. Glad it was over, couldn't have listened much longer.

Thought Provoking Themes

If you're looking for a book provide good discussion topics this is an excellent one. There is lots to discuss surrounding gender and power structure. It was a tough book to read due to the graphic nature of some of the scenes and heavy subject matter. The character development is lacking and it is hard to identify with most of the characters. The voice actor who reads it, is phenomenal and probably the most enjoyable part.

There is so much to love here

This book challenges and really makes you step back and reevaluate both gender and power. A lot of the time I was left thinking “but women would never..” followed by “but men did and do”. Without giving anything away, I loved the ending! I loved how the “writer” was weaved throughout the novel and the ending is such an ah-ha moment. Where if you didn’t understand what the message was, you do now. Really well done, this book should be in high school curriculums. Graphic for sure, but so is history.

This book made me proud to be a woman

This book is phenomenal from start to finish. The characters are what we want to be and what we fear we are. Naomi subverts gender not as a gimmicky plot device but as a truly genius way to dismantle the patriarchy. Also, the voice acting is amazing! Bravo to Adjoa who is obviously a genius as well. I love this book!

Powerful, Thought-Provoking, Addictive Listening

Fantastic all-star performance of the book, which is already riveting but made more so by the high production values. The ideas in the book are the perfect modern counterpart to Handmaid’s Tale - no less horrifying and the satirical notes are perfect. My only quibble with the audio version is the American accents (ouch) but not irksome enough to affect my enjoyment. Definitely recommended.

Powerful! (pun not intended)

Wow! I was captivated start to finish.
The whole time, I was completely taken over by feelings of angst, hope, triumph, shame, worry, doom, lust, excitement, impatience... and finally, at the end, a sense of loss in that I can't continue listening to the story continue. It was a good ending, though.

Disappointing

The premise was wonderful, and it started so well. This novel rips along like a thriller, but I found the novel ultimately disappointing.

Great listen

Binge-listened to this riveting revisionist-history style novel. The plot unfolded naturally from characters that were well-developed and true.

Amazing

This book should be required reading for young adults. One of the best books I've read since the first time I picked up The Handmaid's Tale. The audiobook is incredibly well read and the performance of the main reader is inspired. The story itself is so compelling that after listening to it I want to read it for myself.

This book is powerful.
