Publisher's Summary

When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules....

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir - which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

His terms are simple:

  • They will be husband and wife by night only.
  • No lights, no kissing.
  • No questions about his battle scars.
  • Last, and most importantly...once she's pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:

  • They will have dinner together every evening.
  • With conversation.
  • And unlimited teasing.
  • Last, and most importantly...once she's seen the man beneath the scars, he can't stop her from falling in love.

Hilarious and loving

I kept laughing throughout the story, although predictable, I really enjoyed it. I also liked the narrator Mary Jane Well, she did a fantastic job with all the banter and punch lines!

What a thrilling story

I finished listening to this book in two days, I went about my daily work but could not take my attention away from it. The sex scenes were particularly exciting. I would read it again!

Enchanting!

While I'm not a fan of Tessa Dare's habit of not following the rules of historical accuracy in her historical romances, this story was delightful. Ash and Emma were a charming couple, and their romance was truly enchanting.

The narration by Mary Jane Wells was, as always, superb. I honestly don't know how she does it so well, but she manages to capture every bit of emotion and every inflection like she's living the book. It's genuinely amazing. #Audible1

I look forward to reading the next in the series!

a favorite reread

this is the story that is filled with warmth, Steam, letting others love you and learning to love yourself. it might come across as a light little story but has lots of depth and different situations and relationships. I love how these two grow together. I think Ash's form of swearing with Shakespeare is quite creative. I first heard this narrator doing Pandora and Lisa Kleypas's Devil in Spring. I love Pandora was afraid that's why I would think of this book but she does a good job of creating a slightly different feel.
