Publisher's Summary

Max was a professional soldier, and extremely good at his job. Right up until it killed him.

At the moment of his death, he meets Hildi the Valkyrie, and is given three options. Serve Odin in Valhalla as one of the Einherjar, fighting each day and celebrating each night until the battle of Ragnarok. Accept his death as final, and end his existence. Or be reincarnated as a Battleborne on a random unknown world.

Max chooses to gamble! To live a new life, whatever that might entail. Favored with a blessing of the Valkyries, who gift him with an unusual bloodline, he is reborn on a world of magic and monsters. In fact, his own new body is half monster!

Thrust into the world with nothing but a canvas diaper, sharp teeth, and claws, Max must use his skills as a soldier to improvise and survive. There are no respawns, and at level zero, nearly everything can kill him.

With his new status as one of the Battleborne, much is expected of Max. Dangerous and difficult quests are presented to him, and the loot ranges from filthy goblin loincloths to epic weapons!

Join Max as he learns to navigate his new life, struggling with the instincts of his monster bloodlines, and taking advantage of them at the same time.

For LitRPG style story it was very good

Book like this is one of those that you turn on and kill some time. It was entertaining had all the right mix of action and heartbreak and I was able to turn my brain off. Was it LOTR no but it was worth the money and that’s all that matters.

Fun. I would play in this world

There is nothing terribly original in this LitRPG book - there are dwarves, goblins, orcs..stats, skills, professions..health, mana, experience..and looting for crafting items, coin, and mundane/magic items. Much of the book is straightforward developing skills and finding/learning spells. In fact, the book starts with selecting a race and progressing from Level 0 to legendary status. The listener can visualize every step and mentally picture the inventory and map screens as Max - the main character - sees them. Dave Willmarth is a very descriptive writer, to the point that one can imagine him actually playing the RPG and simply transcribing what happened to his character. He "plays" the story the way that I would - exploring, collecting things, trying strategies out, trying diplomacy in some encounters. As a simple consequence of the subject matter, the writing is immature - it's not what anyone would call 'quality fantasy'. In addition, female NPC's are often just plain slutty, there is a surfer-dude orc, and there are actually poop and fart jokes. Ugh. The writing is not great. The format is a little off, too. In book form, I could go back to maps, inventories, and character sheets to enrich the reading experience..something not possible in an audiobook.

Daniel Wisniewski and Jessica Threet are the best part of this offering. They are a great tandem of readers. Wisniewski handles the male voices and the narrator - Threet the female characters and the metagame notifications. It's a system of reading I have not heard before (though Michael Kramer and Kate Reading use a variation of it) and it works marvelously.

This entertaining story is puerile, but still worth 6.5 stars out of 10.

Surprising

I’ve never been a fan of this author. His stories just weren’t for me. But he struck a cord with this book and I Enjoyed if immensely.
Also it was nice to have two narrators because then the women actually sounded like women and the men sounded like men.

Excellent and with each book gets better.

I’m a fan of fantasy stories and this one is the best I have read in forever. The modern take in to a fantasy new world is amazing, the narrators are amazing. I have trouble sometimes with audiobooks when there is many characters and it’s hard to keep up with who is who, but in this book I have no trouble at all.
I fell in love with this story and all their characters, each book gets better and better… I’m not in to very long stories but with this one I didn’t want it to end. Can’t way for the next book of the series.

If I was 15 years old I would have loved this story. It is the same as every other soldier reincarnation story without any original characters. That being said I will not continue with this audiobook unless it is free and I have nothing else to read or listen to
