True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. It’s been ten years since, and Alex hasn’t stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed.

Description
A gripping thriller about three young girlfriends, a dark obsession, and a chilling crime that shakes up a quiet Iowa town, from the New York Times best-selling author of The Weight of Silence.
For 12-year-old Cora Landry and her friends Violet and Jordyn, it was supposed to be an ordinary sleepover - movies and Ouija and talking about boys. But when they decide to sneak out to go to the abandoned rail yard on the outskirts of town, little do they know that their innocent games will have dangerous consequences.
Later that night, Cora Landry is discovered on the tracks, bloody and clinging to life, her friends nowhere to be found. Soon, their small rural town is thrust into a maelstrom. Who would want to hurt a young girl like Cora - and why? In an investigation that leaves no stone unturned, everyone is a suspect and no one can be trusted - not even those closest to Cora.
Before She Was Found is a timely and gripping thriller about friendship and betrayal, about the power of social pressure and the price of needing to fit in. It is about the great lengths a parent will go to protect their child and keep them safe - even if that means burying the truth, no matter the cost.

Overall ok.
If you enjoy reading diary entries of a 12 year old then this book is probably for you. I do not. Heather Gudenkauf is one of my favourite authors but I was underwhelmed with this one. A lot of repetition. Each individual parent kept saying the same things over and over. They are so overprotective of their children it’s to the point of being completely obnoxious. Cora was extremely annoying to me. Everything made her cry. Literally. About 1/2 of the way through I lost all sympathy for any of the characters and no longer cared who did what. But I was already so far in and paid for it so I finished it. The twist did not shock me and was not exciting. I think this could have been a novella. I feel very bad saying all of this because I LOVE all of Heather’s other novels SO very very much. The narrators voice is a little irritating as well. All of the men sound like a stoned teenage boy. I feel bad saying that too cause I know how hard it is and how hard narrators work! But there’s my review. Go read How I Lied instead.
