When John U. Bacon played for the Ann Arbor Huron High School River Rats, he never scored a goal. Yet somehow, years later he found himself leading his alma mater’s downtrodden program. How bad? The team hadn’t won a game in over a year, making them the nation’s worst squad. With almost everyone expecting more failure, Bacon made it special to play for Huron by making it hard, which inspired the players to excel. Then he defied conventional wisdom again by putting the players in charge of team discipline, goal-setting, and even decision-making—and it worked.

Story
When the Summit Series began on September 2, 1972, Cold War tensions could not have been higher. But that was the whole point of setting up this unprecedented hockey series. Team Canada, featuring the country’s best players—all NHL stars, half of them future Hall of Famers—would play an eight-game series, with four games played across Canada followed by four in Moscow. Almost everyone expected Team Canada to crush their untried opponents eight games to zero, with backups playing the last four games.

The John Scott story is the ultimate underdog narrative in sports during 2016 when Scott - in the twilight of his career - went from a joke All-Star fan-voted nominee to scoring two goals and winning the All-Star Game's MVP title. This is his heartwarming story about an average Joe who became a sports superhero overnight. Known as a willing-and-able fighter and bruiser in the league, John Scott was a surprising and tongue-and-cheek nominee for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game.

Story
NHL tough guys all tell the same story. They all grew up dreaming of skating in the big league as stars. Then one day, a coach tells them the only way to make it is to drop the gloves. And every guy says the same thing: I'll do whatever it takes to play in the NHL. Not Stu Grimson, though. When he was offered a contract to patrol the ice for the Calgary Flames, he said no thanks, and went to university instead. And that's the way Grimson has approached his career and his life: on his own terms.

Story
Ever since his astonishing victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, John Daly has enthralled fans with his big drives, bigger personality, and "Grip It and Rip It" approach to golf - and to life. Usually seen with a Marlboro Light dangling from his lip, John is the unchained, unpredictable, unapologetic bad boy of professional golf. My Life in and out of the Rough is a thrillingly - and sometimes shockingly - candid memoir of a larger-than-life athlete battling assorted addictions (alcohol, gambling, chocolate, sex), his weight, and, perhaps worst of all, divorce lawyers.

But one vicious body check changed his life forever. Despite being shaken by the hit, Murphy was cleared to return to the game. Soon after, his entire life seemed to change. Murphy became a journeyman, moving from team to team. Along the way, other NHLers said they noticed something different about him, too.

Thoroughly Entertaining
I found this book very entertaining, giving loads of "behind the scenes" insight into pro hockey.
The narrator's impersonation attempts kept me chuckling throughout!

Imitating real people???
While the details are interesting I got really annoyed by the narrator trying to imitate the various coaches voice?? From the ad for this book, I thought there would be clips from the coaches themselves - similar to Crosby’s book (which was excellent). Having a guy change his voice to indicate a coach speaking was really bad. Andy Serkis did this reading the Hobbit and it was great because they aren’t real people. Wasted a credit on this one.

Great stories. Awful narrator.
I am not sure what exactly it was but the narrators voice was pure nails on a chalkboard for me. I stuck through due to the immensely high quality of the story but, man, ANYONE ELSE would have narrated this better.
