À propos de cet audio

Joe Gunther is sent to the neighboring town of Bellows Falls to investigate harassment allegations against a fellow officer. But as Gunther doggedly pursues the truth, what begins as a seemingly open-and-shut case starts to look more and more like a frame job, and he soon finds himself feeling around the edges of a statewide drug distribution network.

As always, Vermont itself is a major character in Mayor's writing, with Bellows Falls standing in for any number of slowly decaying, once-proud mill towns.

The setting in this 'Joe Gunther' entry really acts like a central character. The fictional (but strikingly realistic) dying town of Bellows Falls, Vermont pushes some buttons.
Widespread unemployment, drugs, teenaged pregnancy, and rampant crime burden the community with an overwhelming feeling of despair - making the vengeful duplicity & gritty violence of the mystery fit perfectly. This may be Archer Mayor's darkest story: incorporating the author's typical impeccably-researched forensics/procedures, realistic (if a little rushed) witness interviews, and well-scripted action sequences.. but this one is all about the mood. It showed me that Mayor can craft a viscerally-affecting story.

This is likely the best reading performance that I have encountered from Tom Taylorson, too. His characteristic spot-on diction/enunciation, enjoyable timbre/cadence, and cinematic voice-acting are paired with an uncommonly emotive tone that conveys fear, anger, and sadness like an Oscar-worthy on-screen portrayal. In fact, the narration alone would make this audiobook worth a listen.

Altogether, this installment in the series is (sometimes uncomfortably) emotion-laden. I rate the book an outstanding 9.5 stars out of 10. You should absolutely give it a listen.. even if Audible asks for a Credit.
