Publisher's Summary

In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.

Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.

This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.

Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

True? Exaggerated? Doesn't matter—scary.

Genuinely frightening and disconcerting. I had just finished The Exorcist before I started listening to this book, and each took vastly different but equally effective approaches to similar subject matter. The Exorcist is a good story and a good performance as horror, but The Amityville Horror was legitimately scarier. The almost monotonous tone of the narrator lends a very matter-of-fact air to the story and improves its credibility. This book scared me and made me question what I think I know. I'm an atheist, and I would never take my chances at 112 Ocean Avenue—I love the tension between plausibility and doubt in this narrative. Super effective and stimulating read.

More a 'historical reimagaining' then 'true story'

Voice over was solid, at first seemed monotone but it did get better. Content is too convient of plot beats so I cynically disagree on the true story disclaimer. It was ok to good, listening to it was probably more interesting then reading.

Lacking

This book for sure had some spooky moments, I just don’t think the narrator delivered at all. He made it very dull. The story regardless to me was lacking but it was an “easy” listen.

Entertaining

I am a believer of this sort of thing. The book was entertaining but definitely not very creepy. I will say while you listen you should play a drinking game, a shot every time he says 112 Ocean Avenue.

Couldn't Finish

I have 1 hour and 29 minutes left and I just can't finish this book!

The storyline was just ok! From what I've read and watched regarding the Amityville House history, this book is pretty close.

What failed for me was the believability of it! If this novel is based on true events, the residents were dumb not to get out of the house when everything was happening! It is just so unbelievable!

You wake up with burn marks, you wake up and your wife is levitating, you wake up to the door off the hinges and the windows broken... GET OUT OF THAT HOUSE! They just stayed and took it.

I couldn't waste any more of my time listening to this story!

I am thankful that I didn't have to spend any credits! The novel is only worth being included in my membership!

Incredible

I love horror and this one kept me interested the whole time. I thought the parents in the story were idiots but to me that meant more crazy happenings. Very fun read!
