Being “shook” is more than a rap lyric for Charlamagne; it’s his mission to overcome. While it may seem like he is ahead of the game and should have nothing to worry about, he is still plagued by anxieties - fear of being weak; fear of being a bad dad; fear of being a worse husband; and, ultimately, fear of failure. Shook One chronicles his journey to beat back those fears and empowers you to no longer be held back from your potential.

Story
Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

He was sober, smiling, focused, and positive - a far cry from the Gucci Mane of years past. In his early 20s, Curtis Jackson, known as 50 Cent, rose to the heights of fame and power in the cutthroat music business. A decade ago, the multi-platinum selling rap artist decided to pivot. His ability to adapt to change was demonstrated when he became the executive producer and star of Power, a high-octane, gripping crime drama centered around a drug kingpin's family. The series quickly became "appointment" television, leading to Jackson inking a four-year, $150 million contract with the Starz network - the most lucrative deal in premium cable history.

His real name was Earl Simmons. As a child, he placed higher on tests than his fellow students and liked to spend mornings with his mother and sisters playing games and making pancakes. But for young Earl - a boy growing up on the streets of Yonkers, New York - that kind of childhood didn’t last long. Beatings, abuse, and neglect very soon had him moving on to other things, like robbing, stealing, drugs, and, eventually, jail. Along the way, however, he found a talent and a passion for rhyme.

Publisher's Summary
Charlamagne Tha God - the self-proclaimed "Prince of Pissing People Off", cohost of Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club, and "hip-hop's Howard Stern" - shares his unlikely success story as well as how embracing one's truths is a fundamental key to success and happiness.
In his new book, Charlamagne Tha God presents his comic, often controversial, and always brutally honest insights on how living an authentic life is the quickest path to success. Beginning with his journey from the small town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to his headline grabbing interviews with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and Hillary Clinton, he shares how he turned his troubled early life around by owning his (many) mistakes and refusing to give up on his dreams, even after his controversial opinions got him fired from several on-air jobs. Combining his own story with bold advice and his signature commitment to honesty at all costs, Charlamagne hopes this book will give others the confidence to live their own truths.

Wow! That was such an amazing read!
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book! I don’t watch tv, don’t listen to radio, I’m not on any social platforms so I will say I am not or was not very familiar with Charlamagne.
However, I have recently been studying a lot and really being interested in the history of African Americans in the USA, I have been watching and learning a lot from forums, and conversations about Black men, mental health and inter generational trauma. I saw Charlamagne’s name pop up and him being appreciated in Black mental health forums and I was interested in his story. I then watched his interviews with Bishop TD Jakes and Pastor Steven Furtick and from those interviews I was motivated to check out his mind in his book. Just finished this one and will definitely read Shook One!
The reason I have been interested in the history of the USA and African Americans is that I am an African immigrant in Canada working with Indigenous people. Working and living in Indigenous communities has helped me realize that there is no amount of formal education that can ever help to explain history and the effects of inter generational trauma, It’s when you interact with the affected groups to really understand the depths of it. Working and living with Indigenous people has helped me greatly to see similar historical patterns and trauma outcomes that affect Indigenous people and Black people alike. I also see how these trauma outcomes have influenced the narratives and stereo types of the two groups in our societies.
So getting to listen to personal stories like this one is an opportunity especially for us new comers to find our place in the western world understand the pain, the experiences, and the sacrifices our brothers and sisters have gone through and find ways in which we can be allies and be part of change in the world. Thank you for sharing your story Sir. This is what purpose looks like; using your life story to help others find their way, living a life of integrity even at your lowest moments and waiting for next with Faith and Hope without going back to the easy alternatives of the past!

He wanted to be a rapper but became a hardcore critic instead and paid the price to be known as the biggest critic in rap. Entertaining like a rap come up story, selling crack and fist fights included. He has some good industry wisdom for any creative trying to navigate their way through the system

positive and encouraging
I nearly turned it off after the first few sentences. He came on too strong, and I couldn't imagine listening to a full audiobook with his narration. But, it calmed down and, he proved to be an exemplary reader. None of what he presented felt read at all. He takes things off the page and into the microphone with a masterful Grace. this won't be added to the Canon of American greats anytime soon, but, is well worth the listen and is Well written. a lot of the gems he drops are cliche, but, cliches are popular for a reason. This production is well worth listening to and I am thankful that he put the time into making it available for us.

A well narrated story and a compelling message.
I laughed and cried during this book. there were questionable moments but it remained a good read in the end and I would highly recommend it. I could easily see this book being much better in the audio format. Charlamagne bring an energy to this story that truly make you immersed in it. The book is witty and humorous but still keeps a positive message around discipline, ethics and values. I truly enjoyed this one. Thankyou
