Description

Blackwater is the saga of a small town, Perdido, Alabama, and Elinor Dammert, the stranger who arrives there under mysterious circumstances on Easter Sunday, 1919. On the surface, Elinor is gracious, charming, anxious to belong in Perdido, and eager to marry Oscar Caskey, the eldest son of Perdido's first family. But her beautiful exterior hides a shocking secret. Beneath the waters of the Perdido River, she turns into something terrifying, a creature whispered about in stories that have chilled the residents of Perdido for generations. Some of those who observe her rituals in the river will never be seen again....

Originally published as a series of six volumes in 1983, Blackwater is the crowning achievement of Michael McDowell, author of the Southern Gothic classics Cold Moon Over Babylon and The Elementals and screenwriter of Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas. This first-ever one-volume edition will allow a new generation of listeners to discover this modern horror classic.

An amazing book

For a book that doesn’t really have much of a plot other then following the generations of the Caskey family over the course of almost a century, the story is truly captivating. If you enjoy historical fiction with a bit of horror thrown in here and there, this is the book for you. As someone who lives way up north, I found the commentary on every day life in southern Alabama in the 1920s onward to be very pleasing. Micheal McDowell also is an amazing character writer- they all are different, nuanced and multi-dimensional and we see how their experiences and choices shape them over the course of their lives. There is quite a bit of unexpected wisdom that made me contemplate my own life and what I have been through, and why I am they way I am. Very good book, I wish I had them in print as well to go back and reference some great quotes. Highly recommend!

Took a bit but worth it

It started out slowly for me but it didn’t take long to get to a comfortable pace. I started to identify with the characters, and there were many, relatively quickly and got to where I had a hard time stopping. I love the area where it took place and the era. You live their lives with them. A favorite for me.

Wow

This one took me by surprise. It's not horror, more like a period piece with a pinch of supernatural. Very skilled writing and a great multi-generational story that just sucks you in. I really enjoyed it. It is a bit slower moving and not as action packed as others in the genre, so if that's what excites you this might not be the best fit for you. But I'd recommend giving it a chance regardless.

Not what you might think...

While this is both well written, and well performed, it is little more than a turn of the century soap opera. Incidences of the macabre or even the uncanny are precious few and far between, which is NOT what i expected from the synopsis of this book.

Many, many words in a row

Multi-generational saga of dysfunctional ghosts, creatures from the black lagoon and a rich family from Alabama. Bought it on sale, not sure how I got to the end. This one requires commitment.

Epic

Blackwater is an epic southern gothic story that takes place in a re-imagined Perdido, Alabama, on the banks of the Perdido River. The story spans almost 50 years and follows the saga of the Caskey family. In 1919, during a great flood of the Perdido River, Oscar Caskey finds a lady, Elinor Dammert, stranded on the 2nd floor of a flooded hotel. Where did she come from and how did she get to Perdido? These are the first two mysteries that begin the saga. Oscar takes her home and marries her, and life in Perdido will never again be the same.

This is a story of a family of strong Southern women, each powerful and mysterious in her own way. Some of whom find themselves drawn to the black, muddy water of the river at night, where they transform and swim for hours, no matter the temperature. Where they become stronger than the strongest man and protect their families in dark and deadly ways.

This is my 4th Michael McDowell novel and it is an 800+ page/ 30 hour behemoth of an audiobook that I didn't want to end. McDowell perfectly captures Southern women with strong and mysterious personalities in all his works, it seems. Blackwater was published in 1983, and captures the essence of male/female, white/black and rich/poor social dynamics and expectations from the 1920's through to the '60s. Matt Godfrey is a master narrator, perfectly channeling all these characters with authentic accents.

In Blackwater, the Caskey women drive their own fate, and the men are along for the ride. They are generous to those who help them, but to those that cross them - you almost don't want to know.

I loved this story. It was creepy as heck and there were some gasp-out-loud horrifying moments. There were also many laugh-out-loud moments, but these could have been due to Godfrey's understanding of the Southern affect and his resulting performance. Still, it is a horror story; the tension builds as the story progresses and by the last part, it's truly horrific. 5 huge stars.

Epic family Saga

An epic family history with a fair share of strangeness. I was honestly hoping for more strangeness throughout, but enjoyed the saga nonetheless.

The story is awful

The writer wrote women in a patriarchal family fighting each other making negative impression on women leaving men who maintain the patriarchy look innocent.
