Publisher's Summary

A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear.

Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he's got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, for the county's sole female detective, Lena Adams - the first victim's sister - wants to serve her own justice.

But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath...or mean her death.

woah.. wtf

This story was more horrific than anything I could've imagined. Seriously should've had a trigger warning about the graphic description of unbelievable sexual violence.

I did listen to the whole story with disgusted fascination and I was on the edge of my seat.

I HATED the narrator. She made me cringe with her over pronunciation. She sounded like that awful Family Guy cool whip bit the whole story. 'hwhite' 'hwhiskey' .... it drove me nuts. And when she would say vehicle like 'Vee Hickle ' I almost threw my phone.

Also, that female detective was such a cow.

Save your credit

I haven't read a tonne of Karin Slaughter, but I have read a few. I must say that how she treats female victims is absolutely horrendous. The things she does to women are things I would never imagine in a thousand years. She is certainly no-holds-barred when it comes to the mistreatment of women.

The narrator is horrible. She's fine when speaking in conversation but when simply reading the story, she sounds like a bloody robot. Plus she pronounces the "h" in wheel, why, where, which etc. Didn't realize how much that drives me bananas.

The story itself isn't that great. There is rape and murder ... investigation ensues led by a lady cop that deserves a punch in the face.

Also, as others have said, you figure out who the perpetrator is long before they are revealed.

Save yourself the credit and 10 hours of your life and pass on this book.

Perfect title for this book!

As with all Karin Slaughter novels, they're never predictable. Not even if you read them out of order, which I have unfortunately done but I cannot complain. It was completely my fault. That being said, it really did not ruin this book for me at all. It tells its own story. It is a bit raunchy too. What makes a psychopath a psychopath? It is a talent that Karen Slaughter is able to write about and is very good at. Crazy, crazy stuff went on in this book. Great read!!

It’s not bad, just a little too predictable

I thought the book was entertaining enough, but found out pretty quickly it wasn’t really going to leave you in anticipation, wondering who could be the one behind the crimes. It was pretty obvious fairly early in the book. I guess I just prefer there to be a little more mystery, but the narrator was great and it kept me interested till the end.

Good story, interesting characters

The first book in the Grant County series and Karin Slaughter has made me want to listen to the next. Her main characters are interesting though I feel like I only really got to know the female lead, the male lead is not really fully fleshed out. The narrator is wonderful and though she has a very feminine voice, she adds depth and cadence to her voice and you feel you are getting the full range of characters. I guessed the murderer early on, but did have a change of opinion a couple of times, until he was revealed. I also like that the author writes her villains as real people and not someone who can be shot 5 times and still come back to do damage to the hero/heroine.

Female detective irritating

The female detective in the story is immature , homophobic and unlikable. the reader felt no sympathy for her
