Description

The stakes are higher. The witches are deadlier. And the romance is red-hot. The eagerly anticipated sequel to the New York Times and Indiebound best seller Serpent & Dove is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and is an instant New York Times best seller!

Lou, Reid, Coco, and Ansel are on the run from coven, kingdom, and church - fugitives with nowhere to hide.

To survive, they need allies. Strong ones. But as Lou becomes increasingly desperate to save those she loves, she turns to a darker side of magic that may cost Reid the one thing he can’t bear to lose. Bound to her always, his vows were clear: where Lou goes, he will go; and where she stays, he will stay.

Until death do they part.

Don't miss Gods & Monsters, the spellbinding conclusion of this epic trilogy, coming July 2021!

Fast paced and full of action

Other reviewers have commented that they did not like Reid but I loved him in this book, The writing is excellent- Reid really struggles here to reconcile his present “truth” with how he was raised. It’s not an easy journey to overcome years of bigotry and you really see his heart as he wrestles to ensure he does the right thing.

The performance for Reid is spectacular.

Meanwhile Lou is in denial over the impacts that her history and her use of magic has on her. Choices are starting to catch up with her. Again- another solid audiobook performance here.

Both these characters are deeply flawed and adrift, which makes for some interesting storytelling. I can’t wait to see where the next book leads.

not as good as the first but still enjoyable.

I don't really know how audiobooks work, but I would think there would be some kind of director, especially with multiple narrators, to keep consistency. Which is why I don't understand why Holter used a British accent for Claude while Saskia did not. Also, Holter's french accent got worse. The plot and character arcs in this book weren't as well written as the first, especially in regards to Reed and Lou. But I still enjoyed it none the less!

Holy Sh*t What A Ride

Blood & Honey
Written by: Shelby Mahurin

Plot

The story picks up right after the end of Serpent & Dove. Lou, Reid, Ansel, Mme Labelle, Coco, and Beau are hiding in La forêt des Yeux, they need to find allies to fight against Morgane and they need to do it fast. They want to talk to the blood witches, the loup-garou, and even the king. They also encounter new characters and even though I was wary of Claud at first, I admit that I really loved him, he is a great character. This book is more serious and darker. Reid is trapped in his dark thoughts most of the time, he hates himself for killing the archbishop, he hates magic but he loves Lou. We could feel anger between them for the first 300 pages or so. Sure it added drama (and I love drama), but I still missed their funny and sarcastic dialogues. The storyline is great. The beginning is a little slow, and some parts were a little long, but the book as a whole is really worth it. The ending was heartbreaking even though I expected it a little. There is also a kind of cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next book. there are many action scenes and overall I really liked this book, but it was not as good as the first one.

Plot Thoughts

Ok so let me start off with I know that Lou making the decision to split up to get more accomplished may have seemed like a good idea at the time however I personally believe it wasn't smart.
Secondly, How did I know that the missing boy from the witch oven was going to end up either tortured or dead? SURE ENOUGH!

Lastly, How Reid managed to make himself feel uncomfortable with the conversation between himself and the circus people I have no idea. Men may not be experienced with talking as much as women most times but COME ON REID! its small talk to build a relationship.

When I got to the part of the book where the group finds the wolf pack all I could think of was that scene in Jurassic Park 3 when Alan and the group confronts the Raptors and give the eggs back. "Get down everyone it's a challenge"

Overall
All in all I loved this sequel. I didn't get all the feels I was expecting. However, with that being said I think this book just conveniently sets us readers up for what's to come. The epic battle, the characters finding what they lost in the journey along the way, and ultimately reuniting accepting their fates to overcome. Predictable yes, but at the same time a uniquely adventurous ride. Most definitely looking forward to the impressive conclusion, but please I beg of you Mahurin don't make this more than a trilogy or I am bound to lose interest.

Love interest hard to like

I like the world development. The magical concepts are well thought out and developed. The enemies to lovers trope is there but the male love interest is so hard to like. The heroine was great and I was very invested in her success but the romance definitely left something to be desired.

good story. I have a hard time with the female leads rash decisions.

love the male narrators performance. do not enjoy female narrators performance. when they perform the same character, the accents are completely different. it's confusing.

So Good. So Tragic.

This novel explores the complex nature of morality and relationship. I devoured the entire story. Romance. Heartbreak. Consequence. Readers are forced to feel all the feelings; the good and the tragic.

Love!

So obsessed with this series. Breaks your heart in half while also warming it greatly. Love, action, fantasy, it has everything that I love in a story. If you enjoyed the first book, I highly recommend continuing the series.

Will i ever finish this book

I have less than 5 chapters to read. But i cant! This book is bad. I dont even know why i didn’t stop after the first one. Nothing is cringier than the way they say « La forêt des yeux ». God this story was bad. So cringe. Bad story over all. Just bad. Never heard of a bad audiobook before this one.

Not worth the credit

I wish I had listened to myself and not wasted a credit on this sequel. The first was not enjoyable, but I did it anyways *hoping* it would get better. It didn't.
