Publisher's Summary

A roar of a dark and luscious epic fantasy that’s layered with heady romance, bloodthirsty magic, and ghostly intrigue - an absolutely wicked delight.

Princess Aurelia is a prisoner to her crown and the heir that nobody wants. Surrounded by spirits and banned from using her blood-magic, Aurelia flees her country after a devastating assassination attempt. To escape her fate, Aurelia disguises herself as a commoner in a new land and discovers a happiness her crown has never allowed. As she forges new bonds and perfects her magic, she begins to fall for a man who is forbidden to rule beside her.

But the ghosts that haunt Aurelia refuse to abandon her, and she finds herself succumbing to their call as they expose a nefarious plot that only she can defeat. Will she be forced to choose between the weight of the crown and the freedom of her new life?

Worth the listen!

Good start to a new series, especially for a new author! The next in the series will have great potential.

The suspense was very well done, extremely well done! I found myself sitting at the edge of my seat at times! This author should really consider writing more suspense novels! She builds the suspense scenes so good, you might get a little anxiety rush as you wait for the scene to play out!!! You won't be sleeping if you listen to this at night!!

The "romance" (if you can even call it that), was awful. Yes. Awful. What little romance there was, I just didn't really feel. It was there, just not what I expected. Holly Black, Laurell K. Hamilton are excellent "romance" writers IMO. It just didn't do it for me in this novel.

I would of liked to of seen more use of the magic system. The author planned out the actual magic system nicely and it was interesting, but I think she missed an opportunity to utilize it more. There was very little magic growth in the main character. It was slow and repetitive, and I kept hoping for more! I didn't get more.

Characters could also use a little work. Some were very underwhelming and some have/had the potential to be adored characters. They just seemed underdeveloped and lacking connection to the reader. Not all of them, just some.

Overall it's a great start for a new author. I look forward to the next!

Quality writing

I’ve read so many books now that they’re all starting blend into the same story arc of exposition > rising action > climax > resolution, blah, blah, tired trope, blah.

This book, however, felt fresh. Characters were dynamic, likable, believable. Overall really well written and engaging.

Highly recommended!

PHENOMENAL STORYTELLING

This book made me feel so many things. Amazing storytelling, wonderful characters, beautiful imagery, and phenomenal thrills, chills, twists, and turns.

Princess Aurelia was such a strong character and Zan was adorably perfect! And Kate and Nathaniel are Couple Goals. Ahhhh!!!

This book made me cry, laugh, yell, and stay up as late as I possibly could to keep reading. I read this book during the same time I listened to it’s audiobook. The narration (Nicola Barber) made this book even more enjoyable, which it already was.

As for Crystal Smith, I’m so excited to watch her career blossom. If this is what her first book is like, I can’t wait for her second one.

Poor logic

The characters are fine, but the ‘twists’ are HIGHLY predictable, and frequently characters act in ways that are contrary to their best interests to further the plot, but in ways that don’t make sense for the characters.

Captivating, so good!

Strong heroine who isn't always whining or powerless without a man to help her. The story kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and the narrator did a wonderful job. By far the best book I've listened to in quite a while.

A great new series to listen to

Love these types of books. This is a very impactful book with emotion all over the place. There are great stories and plots and mystery and just love the magic and vibe of this. I'm a big fantasy book fan and this book worked for me. Just can't wait for the next books to come.

Meh.

A very adolescent fantasy novel. Characters lacked any depth, even the main character whose first-person POV comprised the entire book. The world-building was completely lacking also. There are 2 kingdoms. That's it. That's all you hear about. I generally like strong female leads, but this one fell flat.

Overall, this book felt like it was written by a teenager for teenagers. It was well-constructed verbally, and I appreciated the decent vocabulary and imagery. However, I would urge the author to read more successful and critically-acclaimed books and try again. Unless they were trying to make it so simple. If so, hooray?

The narrator did well, which is why I didn't quit midway through.

Entertaining

The story about a princess with blood magic trying to save the people she loves, is basically a good one. However, it’s a bit confusing and her magic is sometimes powerful and sometimes not. Worth listening to but not fantastic.
