It’s isekai power fantasy written for 15 year old males. The hero, thankfully, isn’t a jerk. But that’s in part because he was one in the past life. The modern world soul has overwritten the fantasy character but that doesn’t really matter as we don’t have any skills of the talented rock star nor the master mage as everything is reset in the initial incident.
Which would be fine, as the theme is cultivation in a more traditional fantasy world only all the cultural details are also straight from cultivation novels instead of fantasy. Sects, inner/outer/core members and all that. Not that it comes up a lot, we only see a little bit beyond what the plot requires to be the rails.
Which kinda becomes its own problem. We have a genre savvy hero who does things because it’s the trope, and because the author wants to have things easy our hero even accepts ‘novel level’ coincidences with lampshading how convenient it is. ‘Oh so the closest one of these things I need is two weeks away? Sir! This strange thing is happening on the 3rd floor that turns out to be just what you were looking for! Oh that is convenient, carry on.’
There is no tension because every obstacle is either immediately smashed through or clearly not an obstacle but an opportunity.
The relationship is also in that 15 year old mindset of girls are icky/alluring PG state. Our hero barely holds hands for all that his reborn body is 20 and the earth one wasn’t stated (unless I missed it). This relationship limbo is something most of his characters in other books go through as I recall…
I didn’t hate it, but I don’t know if I will seek out more either. Looking at the lists of books written by Seth Ring I see that I haven’t finished any of his other series, just not picking up the next at some point.
There is no danger in what is basically a cozy cultivation isekai power fantasy. Sometimes just a basic cheeseburger is all you crave?

It’s a great concept - it’s fun and we spend tons of time in discovery with the MC both learning how this system works and how he’s going to pass off his extremely unusual powers in a world dominated with a magic system he can’t access. But there is more than one way to skin a cat and it’s a big freaking cat (so to speak). The power scaling and progression is extremely enjoyable. The MC is likeable and the supporting characters are good.
The narrator hasn’t always been my favourite - he has a tendency to sound like he’s stage yelling lines when voicing the MC, yet he has a great voice - but I found this to be not as much of a thing in this book, showing the narrator is growing as well. I’ll keep rooting for him because he’s extremely clear and his diction is excellent, and thankfully he avoided some of the things he does in other books that I’d normally object to in this go around. So I’m happy with his narration work for sure.
Fun series so far. I’ve read the next book in this series shifts its focus of the type of growth for a good chunk of it, but I have ti imagine that’s by design, because, as we all know, everything good happens in threes. I’m assuming the physical growth focus in book 1, crafting growth in book 2, maybe soul is book 3? That could mean “the whole” is the focus in book 4? Not sure, but speculation aside I intend to find out.
