Publisher's Summary

Cynical, quick-on-the-trigger Takeshi Kovacs, the ex-U.N. envoy turned private eye, has changed careers, and bodies, once more, trading sleuthing for soldiering as a warrior-for-hire and helping a far-flung planet's government put down a bloody revolution.

But when it comes to taking sides, the only one Kovacs is ever really on is his own. So when a rogue pilot and a sleazy corporate fat cat offer him a lucrative role in a treacherous treasure hunt, he's only too happy to go AWOL with a band of resurrected soldiers of fortune. All that stands between them and the ancient alien spacecraft they mean to salvage are a massacred city bathed in deadly radiation, unleashed nanotechnolgy with a million ways to kill, and whatever surprises the highly advanced Martian race may have in store. But armed with his genetically engineered instincts, and his trusty twin Kalashnikovs, Takeshi is ready to take on anything...and let the devil take whoever's left behind.

What the critics say

"A superior, satisfying cyberpunk noir adventure." (Publishers Weekly)
"A lively follow-up to an energetic debut, with a still refreshingly cynical hero." (Booklist)

I had no idea what's going on

impossible to follow, missing details and inconsistent pacing. recommend just leaving it at the 1st novel

Ok story, not as great as the first book

Interesting listen. The first story focused alot on resleeving but this second one seems to treat the subject more like an afterthought. the story while engaging does drag on a bit. But the characters are interesting but somehow cliché at the same time.

It’s worth a listen

I hesitated to purchase this when I read the reviews. I’m glad I did though. I will say, if you have a hard time keeping names and characters straight, you may want to actually read the book. There are a variety of characters that can be confusing to keep track who is who. Also, if you find the narrators voice had too much bass, remember that most devices you can turn the bass down in audio settings.

As far as the plot, I feel like it was what I expected after listening to the first book. I feel like the format was the same. Lots of details leading you one way, and then they get stitched together to show you an ending that is surprising but makes sense.

The sci-fi fantasy setting is what I love most about the whole series. The aliens, the utopias and dystopias that all exists across this universe intrigues me. I enjoyed the authors creative ideas, and the details he used to describe them.

I’ll probably listen again in the future. For now, I’m on to book 3

Needed to go thru it a couple times

It seemed like there was so much going on in this book, compared to Altered Carbon. I had to listen to this one 3 times to really figure out what was going on.

Performance was great, story was tough for me to follow.

Great ideas, ok execution. Worth a read.

I liked the premise of the story. Richard Morgan's universe where people rarely die, but just move between bodies and planets at faster than light speeds is fun to think about. I didn't find the writing that compelling though.

R.K.Morgan is my newest Favorite.

A fantastic next step in the Takeshi Kovach trilogy. The change of pace and style from Altered Carbon is fascinating and fun. Todd McLaren lends his voice well to this tale.
